about

Once upon a time there was this little pandemic and it shut the entire world down. Lots of people died, many more got unreasonable, and the rest of us just hunkered down, appreciative of the opportunity to finally be able to get some shit done.

Which is precisely what I did, in a number of ways.

One such project involved an iPhone app called WaveJam. This is a lo-fi, fun little toy that allows people to collaborate on music remotely. So I touched base with my old Carpe Diem cohort, Jon Weinhagen, and we proceeded to record an album via that app. It was our first collaboration in over two decades, during which time my own songwriting had vastly improved, and it was amazing to hear his guitar on those songs. Some of those songs were newly written but most of them were long-lost nuggets, from various corners of the FDM songbook.

The resultant album, Kites Of Spring, was released to the world on April Fool's Day 2021. Never mind the fact that only maybe five people in the world actually *got* it, it was still a monumental occasion (there is still an EP worth of leftover tracks that I keep meaning to release) and is a record that I love dearly.

This EP contains modern FDM renderings of several of those songs, captured for the sake of consistency and completeness. While the fidelity may be better, and the performances a bit tighter, these versions are mostly for vanity purposes and are not meant to supplant the Carpe Diem versions. That album is holy - this EP is fun.

Of the songs on this set, two of them were written in 2020. "Inside Voice" is about people who use the internet as a soapbox, screaming in all caps about some half-baked opinion that literally no one needs to hear, while "Blind-Eyed Betty" is explicitly about that period in time when the lockdown was new, covid was still a mystery, and the whole of outside was a ghost town.

Another project that I undertook in 2020 involved taking vintage, unused FDM lyrics and finally setting them to music (this resulted in almost 200 songs, and is discussed in detail elsewhere). Two of those lyrics dated from 2007 - "Kites Of Spring" and "Not Just The Blues" - and it was amazing to finally be able to figure out how those songs should go. Lastly, we have "Even Orion Knows" and "The Takedown". Originally dating from 2007 & 2008, respectively, but never recorded for any other project, it's cool to see those tracks in a new light.

Stay tuned for more from Carpe Diem, as well as more new FDM music in 2023 (and, hopefully, far beyond).
