JUST LIKE THIS just like this a faint possibility brings you to your knees makes you beg for anything you think you need makes you weep for all the things you never had it makes you grow it makes you think that you know and it makes you think so it's got a hold on all your senses and it looks just like this -2/24/06

STRAIGHT INTO THE GREAT DIVIDE sing about the passion only me and myself scattering the ashes from the back of the shelf smother one another and get back into the wind before we get on board to do it all again gettin' up, headin' out straight into the great divide losing out or winning it depends on the parade this story's never ending, dig it back to back charades and everything we made and all our moments in the shade was taken over by the queen in her tirade wakin' up, crashin' out straight into the great divide pushing all the buttons and pulling out the stops there's nothing else to do but wait until the hammer drops spending up to save up or defending the depraved their idol's fallen deep into a semi-hollow grave and passion has a price it's never what you want to pay there's always something necessary getting in the way is it real? is it a lie? is there something to deny? or are you waiting for the chance to say it eye to eye? sittin' up, spinnin' out straight into the great divide -2/28/06

Grey 05:46
GREY heard in voices on the phone felt in choices once unknown bending only breaks it all again to be left out standing in the garden when the story isn't clear and the clouds all reappear you grit your teech and trudge away through trench of black and saltless sea of grey left in letters in the box to think outside the trivial clocks the posters map it out again and lead you back into the garden when the lions barely purr and the cauldron's left unstirred undeterred, you toil through the trench of black and saltless sea of grey grey to think around it think around it now grey to think around it think around it now grey - think about it grey replaced by circles in the sand defaced by mercurial hands they leave you nothing to defend and send you back to the garden when the gardens barely grow and the trees tell you to go you close your eyes and spin through the haze of the trench of black and saltless sea of grey -11/11/05

Creepin' In 03:38
CREEPIN' IN you can slide to the other side hanging on a window pane how's the rain? is she ever gonna speak again? they give applause and scatter with the evening winds and the only way to see it's just a whim pretend when your last of kin is standing at the other end singing to themselves so how've you been? are you in? do you need to see beyond the shadows, creepin' in it's a shame, what a game they were handed out to dry over the right hand lane slaves of tightened corners or the fear of the rain of the washing out and of the flushing down the drain sweet lorraine said it's like an open book or a scar, like you took the keys and left them in in the dark on your knees crying please i think it's just that time to go don't you know we got everything you need under this wide windscreen where the shadows only sparkle when they bleed what'd she say? did she stray from the point? or did she wallow in the joints of the fray of the swallowed and decayed and underpaid, it's a curse like the first time you felt the shadows creeping in don't you remember the first time you felt the shadows creeping in -2/19/06

Static Pink 02:22
STATIC PINK if you think that i knew that i'd find my way back over the walls and all the heart attacks you've only a moment before you sink into the heart of the harvest and the static pink stopping and starting and snapping and stepped steeped in the thick while the cheerleaders wept stalled in the back with the dirt and the stink and the bars of the cage and the static pink to twist and to turn well, it's not what you think it's only the river and the static pink -2/10/06

THE DESIRE THING if you look into the mirror painted on the surface of the stream if you listen to the rain and ladies when they sing sing sing doin' the desire thing when you said that it wasn't fever but something bigger than we are when you looked around the world and you squinted at the stars on your ring doin' the desire thing when that look is just the look of loving in the arches of the gloom when that love is looking for a corner in your closet or a sting doin' the desire thing -3/7/06

HEAVY STEPS AHEAD take a good look at your boots, my dear coz you've got heavy steps ahead no, don't let em crush you and if the monkeys on your back keep spitting from the barrel of the gun that pointed at the monsters in your bed don't let em touch you and in the interim if everybody's feeling okay if their shadows never bled sometimes you just have to see the sights sometimes you have to sleep at night sometimes you wanna think it over sometimes you remember what she said sometimes there's heavy steps ahead don't let em crush you -5/4/06

Marcus Said 04:47
MARCUS SAID slipping through the fingers of an angel on a dull day acting like the devil in a pinch, to give it all away tripping through the subtle rift of agony and grace just to win the race today just like marcus said scratching at the windows in a low-lit room, yeah waiting for the troubadour to sing another borrowed tune for you to give it all away tripping through the subtle grey of everything you keep and all that's left aside today just like marcus said dancing in the shadows of the pillars of the new day glancing at the arrows as they point the other way tripping through the subtle grey of everything you say and all that's left beyond the dirt and clay just like marcus said what's in the way becomes the way so that's the way it goes don't you know? -2/24/06

LOVE SHUTS OUT THE LIGHTS just like the roses grow with thorns and upward eyes just like the oceans flow she got the blue light shine she's gonna feed the sky just like those scattered days and nervous, sleepless nights we're like two castaways where love shuts out the lights just like the boulders grind to pebbles, sands so fine your footsteps trail behind fade into creeks of wine i guess we're doin' fine just like the wind she sails her fleet of angry kites i'm like a bed of nails when love shuts out the lights love shuts out the lights leaves you dizzy and numb and you scratch at your face in the sun leave you burning inside you got nowhere to hide when you run love got no reason just feeling and sight love counts the seasons and shuts out the lights just like the buzzards sweep and circle round their prey on rocky ledge so steep where one wind's slightest sway and then you're floating away where time and space collide in planes of disarray that shine in shades of white where love shuts out the lights -2/24/06

REALITY SWING step once, step twice to the three and the four step over the rhythm that you laid on the floor it's a nice piece of melody ensconced in a song when the old poets linger a little too long strike once for ancestors strike twice for the ash you can settle for nothing if you can handle the lash look over your shoulder to the once and again and think of the new ones that might have been step once, step twice to the three and the four step over the rhythm that you laid on the floor it's a nice piece of melody ensconced in a song when the old poets linger a little too long it's all for the passage and all for the crush all of the masses feel a little too rushed it's like an old story where the end all makes sense where the hope and the glory are on the right side of the fence step once, step twice to the three and the four step over the rhythm that you laid on the floor it's a nice piece of melody ensconced in a song when the old poets linger a little too long speak once of opinions think twice if you don't step over the minions that haven't or won't trust not the pied piper who leads you to gold he'll rob when you get there and leave you in the cold step once, step twice to the three and the four step over the rhythm that you laid on the floor it's a nice piece of melody ensconced in a song when the old poets linger a little too long open the channels of love and deceit described in the annals inscribed in your seat step it up gently and stir it around for the answers are waiting for your feet on the ground step once, step twice to the three and the four step over the rhythm that you laid on the floor it's a nice piece of melody ensconced in a song when the old poets linger a little too long -2/24/06

about

Chris Anderson's 72nd full-length album release.

It all started in February 2006 with a photograph and an evening with photoshop. I took this recent selfie and created this really cool piece of art. I had no intention of doing anything with it. Just killin' time. I named the photo "Static Pink" and got on with my day. But then a few days later I looked at it and wrote a lyric of the same name. Then a few days after that, I sat down and set that lyric to music. Recording it on a cheap handheld recorder, I had fun and then started trolling through various unused lyrics and setting them to music. Using that photo as a cover, a really lo-fi album was assembled, titled Static Pink. I had so much fun that I did it again the next day and then, having run out of lyrics to exhume, I started writing. And writing like mad. Each writing session was assembled into an album and released on the Bootleg Records label, and soon it was time to make more proper recordings for a possible album. Over a month or so, around thirty or forty songs were recorded, which resulted in the albums Static Blue and Illumination. Those sessions were a blast and some great memories were created during that time. This batch of material was a big step forward for me and it actually inspired me to return to the live stage for a while.

As I have been going through this "anniversary series", this is one of those albums I most looked forward to recording. By the time I got to it, however, I was cranking out one project after another and I will admit that the recording of this album was a mighty blur (despite it being only a few months ago). The bits I do remember were a lot of fun. The songs that make up this set originally appeared on Static Blue and Illumination, as well as a few songs that are appearing here for the first time. These songs are some of the most dear to me and remind me of a very different time. When those original albums were recorded, my recording setup did not allow for drums or full production so it is a thrill to be able to hear these songs the way I heard them in my head all those many years ago. I hope you like it.
