Slender 04:01
SLENDER there've been times when i wanted to fall down there've been times when i thought i was all out there've been times when i thought it was all so long ago then i saw it was just a reflection of another bad dream in the garden it took me back, for a second, i thought i was all alone but at the edge of the fog was an angel she'd been standing there all of the time at the edge of the fog was an angel i can't bear to break this slender line there've been times when i hid in the shadows there've been times when i took it for something else there've been times when i thought i was on some other road then i heard that voice in the wild wind talking like a ghost but i knew it was not then another deal with the devil before i had to go but at the edge of the fog was an angel she'd been standing there all of the time at the edge of the fog was an angel i can't bear to break this slender line there've been times when i dreamt of a way in there've been times when i sang of the fire scars there've been times when i shook it off and just let it go then i knew it was all in my head some rag-tag poet with his hand in my pot of gold i took him out and i left him dead on the side of the road but at the edge of the fog was an angel she'd been standing there all of the time at the edge of the fog was an angel i can't bear to break this slender line -2/8/13

One Step 04:42
ONE STEP meet me out on the sidewalk sometime after the rain the bus rolls by but now don't you cry it'll always roll by again like a beacon out of the yonder from the fog and the smog and the dew there is never so much we should ponder but that doesn't it means nothing to you we got one step out of the fire and one step over the edge we're coming down but we're nowhere near it yet at least we got time, we can talk out about the lines and the lies and the change between the bridges we burn and the lessons unlearned this little angel sings out of her range she's a painter but carries no brushes her eyes, they tell all you should know beyond the peace of the push and the rage of the rush she spins in ovals and thanks holy joe we got one step out of the fire and one step over the edge we're coming down but we're nowhere near it yet to pity the wise is to miss out on all the wonders that time would refrain from building the wall to just nothing at all i see a face in each drop of the rain she cracks a grin and a wink, how she taunts me as i wobble and weedle away while all the gypsies got high, she just stood idly by and she waited for something to say we got one step out of the fire and one step over the edge we're coming down but we're nowhere near it yet -2/6/13

Spinout 04:49
SPINOUT i walked alone through the white-wash of this town through the lifeblood of this ragged hand-me-down and something caught my eye, like a blackout in the sky like a cracked-out camera eye, it shot me down ten-cent, nonsense, make me flip and make me spin ten-cent, nonsense, make me flip and make me spin, spinout, spinout i took the cause and i ran for all my life yeah i ran as if my life was running out at last i settled down on the fringes of the sound where the last note played was a thousand yards around ten-cent, nonsense, make me flip and make me spin, spinout, spinout i stopped the world, i got off and got back on yeah, i came back just to do it all again hindsight's just a game where all the losers know their place and their place is at the start of every race -2/8/13

Barely 04:34
BARELY sunset on the barrows of the moor the light it trickles down like blood from those ill-gotten wars i heard the creaking of the door and i thought about the time when all you did was scrap and snore barely it's contrary merrily we'd roll along singing songs about the sun singing songs about the sun barely's kinda scary harried house, we're all in line doin' time, seems like it's time to run along just leave a letter when you go coz i can't bear to think i'd never know just leave a letter when you go or better yet, we'll just forget and keep on down the same old road deep-six on the heels of mock defeat times like these i'd often dream of other swallowed streets where something in the air just smells so sweet yet as bitter as the burgundy that's spilling from my feet barely's never carried staring over starting lines swaying side to side swaying side to side barely's always varied bury up and check the time we're outta time, seems like it's time to run along just leave a letter when you go coz i can't bear to think i'd never know just leave a letter when you go or better yet, we'll just forget and keep on down the same old road it's kinda nice here in the wind take a photo so to live it all again when the dogs don't do you right sometimes you gotta hit the gas and run those amber lights judas matter streaming through my veins beyond the blue there's nothing but the stars and their remains this storm's reduced to glitter, then to grain until it boils over and we do it all again barely we are wary fairly fused and fightin' fine under the lightest light under the lightest light barely's only very rarely at the finish line realign, let's realign or move on further down the vines just leave a letter when you go coz i can't bear to think i'd never know just leave a letter when you go or better yet, we'll just forget and keep on down the same old road -2/5/13

Lookin' Down 02:43
LOOKIN' DOWN i had a dream of you t'was nothing much so tired of looking down black ice, november nights i'm scared but yet i'm not just looking down just like two monkeys on the floor (we do the do-si-do around) those birds are kicking down the door (and knock us to the splintered ground) we raise the flag, proclaiming "war no more" no more looking down tough talk, it's amusing when the made-up face is bruised and looking down the pundit's got an answer, see-through shoot that gnarly fox out on the lawn let's take him down just like two monkeys on the floor (we do the do-si-do around) those birds are kicking down the door (and knock us to the splintered ground) we raise the flag, proclaiming "war no more" no more looking down time out, yeah no more looking down too deep to see the light this tunnel's black as night we're closing on 'em now the ticker tells it different edit out the parts that show you looking down just like two monkeys on the floor (we do the do-si-do around) those birds are kicking down the door (and knock us to the splintered ground) we raise the flag, proclaiming "war no more" no more looking down -2/5/13

In Limbo 03:36
IN LIMBO anytime we look the other way burn the bridges in the dark just to show them their place we feel the pull but knock the angels from the race it's a good thing we're folding our hands in their face and anyway, there's a million little things we'll never say just to keep us in line we rise again and take the burden with a grin it's a good thing we're turning away from the wind so what's the cause of so many flubs and flaws we push the poison in the road and barely think to pause it's outta sight but still this movement isn't right it's a good thing we're fading along with the light -2/5/13

WE GOT IT MADE the door slams, it's three in the morning and we're all here just like we were before and martha's still weeping in the corner in her dress, on the floor and sometimes you can hear the engines gearing up for another uphill grind and sometimes you can't help the laughing we got it made, yeah man, we got it made it's in the air, these tiny pangs of regression like the oil, and all the mess we contend when the bough breaks, and all the colors are twisted only a fool would shake his head in defense and sometimes you can see the wind blow tearing down in hydrated warning signs and sometimes you can't help but nod out we got it made, yeah man, we got it made -2/8/13
8.
THE WILD WIND hand over hand, it's all part of the plan tripping us over the rocks and the sand the big one's coming so you better all hold your applause tired and broken, the piper, he spoke he received all the letters the gypsies all wrote to bend to the wind is to break down the roots of the cause and the wild wind it cuts to the nerves of our sensitive skin and the wild wind it blows us all over, again and again and the wild wind it sings like a choir, some new kind of hymn and the wild wind blows stooping and staring and stepping in line the oracle shatters his verse with a rhyme that no one guessed would have caused such a mighty stir beneath the old road there's another and then it leads you away from the drift and the spin and the rustle of ghosts and some long lost saboteur and the wild wind it cuts to the nerves of our sensitive skin and the wild wind it blows us all over, again and again and the wild wind it sings like a choir, some new kind of hymn and the wild wind blows curse all the giants that get in the way it's the end of the start of another long day where diamonds are shit on the boots of the ones in need they don't see it coming, hell nobody does it's not like wasn't the way that it was when the monkeys came down from the trees and they found their feet and the wild wind it cuts to the nerves of our sensitive skin and the wild wind it blows us all over, again and again and the wild wind it sings like a choir, some new kind of hymn and the wild wind takes us all over again and again and again... -2/8/13

FORWARD TO THE SUN time and time again we find we're hanging from the horse's blind again beneath the banks of memories to the brittle, broken, brothers of the wind like castanets, we slack and clack and wait until they bring us back the one road, forward to the sun forward to the sun forward to the ones who make and break our stride don't shake it up, don't stay inside don't hide out like the ones we're always going on about forward, cried the jailer in the sky we never thought to wonder why we sit our spell and then erode complaining that the road is far too wide still the traffic snarls, and it's gnarled up the clown sits sipping from his cup there's platinum in the wine forward to the sun forward to the ones who make and break our stride don't shake it up, don't stay inside don't hide out like the ones we're always going on about tiny, like the drops of rain cascading down this ancient window pane yet enormous like this chorus singing out the gospel in a broken chain where the links are sometimes lost behind the bullets and the frost exhausting time, now forward to the sun forward to the ones who make and break our stride don't shake it up, don't stay inside don't hide out like the ones we're always going on about -2/8/13

Perhaps 04:08
PERHAPS how many times did you see the stars fall down? did you see the stars fall down that many times? how many times did you see them circle round? did you see them circle round that many times? once in a while, perhaps we'll laugh once in a while, perhaps we'll dance once in a while, perhaps we'll settle for the sun how many times did you see the sky fall down? did you see the sky fall down that many times? how many times did you see the king uncrowned? did you see the king uncrowned that many times? once in a while, perhaps we'll cry once in a while, perhaps we'll fade once in a while, perhaps we'll settle for the rain how many times did you see it all fall down? did you see it all fall down that many times? how many times did you lay there on the ground? did you lay out on the ground that many times? once in a while, perhaps we'll save once in a while, perhaps we'll spend once in a while, perhaps we'll skip on til the end how many times did you fall down? -2/6/13

Sad Old Sun 03:03
SAD OLD SUN and anyway we left our mark upon the world and anyway we tripped the wires in the woods now we're home bound beyond the glitter is the gold now we're down bound we use it up before we go it's a shame about the time ticking over, we're moving closer to the line belief's a goal, if we must lie looking over that sad old sun that fragile one, that faceless one he's like a child, he sees the light he don't wonder why we lost it all a while before the last charade where the pipers all got paid and they flew away -2/8/13

about

Chris Anderson's 41st full-length album release and 7th consecutive entry into the February RPM Challenge.

After the relative creative dearth of 2012 (the only songs written were what was on Savage Graceland, and the two songs left off that record), it was not the easiest task, finding the spark to trigger the 2013 RPM Challenge. But it had to be done, so I somehow managed to reach into the abyss of my soul and remove the gag from my muse. Once that was done, songs came flying forth at a furious pace.

As with the prior year's Challenge, Krissy was out of town (this time, in Australia). Unlike the prior year's Challenge, I remained in a relatively upbeat frame of mind, and that gave us a very different collection of songs. Thirteen such songs found a home on the album while three were issued as b-sides, and an additional five somehow escaped the recording process to enjoy life on the shelf (two of those songs were later recorded by the revamped Carpe Diem, for the Kites Of Spring album),

"Slender" kicks off the album with a bit of a country feel and was, at the time, one of my most commercial sounding songs (at least I thought so - the several dozen opportunities I submitted the song to had a differing opinion). This was the single and is still a song that I am quite proud of.

"One Step" shares melodies with two other songs that were left on the cutting room floor ("The Lone Man" and "The Big Top"). This is, by far, the superior of the three and was always a fun one to play live. The chorus is one that I love so much. "Spinout" started life on a list of potential titles and turned into an explosive, rockin' tune (Krissy always liked this one). "Barely" is another upbeat number, with a very distinct FDM vibe. It's not one that I think of very often but it always knocks me out when I hear it. "Lookin' Down" has an almost punk feel and is one of many songs I have about the abomination that is cable news. "In Limbo" is a nice little tune that I always forget about, to the point that when it comes on I can never remember the title. It's a shame. I dig it.

The second half of the album gets underway with the slow, contemplative "We Got It Made", which soon gives way to the 3/8 swirl of "The Wild Wind". The title track comes next and is a fiery little folk tune with a lyric that I really, really like. This track was originally eleven minutes long, with a long jam tacked onto the end. This was edited out for the album (but appears in full as a b-side). I always loved playing that song but I don't think I ever played it without fucking up the lyric.

Next up is "Barrelhouse Blues" which is a song about staying true to yourself and not buying into the wares & whims of the bullshitters. This song was one that my sister, Amanda, had in her standard playlist so, occasionally when she would be having a party, that song would eventually come up and confuse me just about every time. "Perhaps" has some cool music and a tight feel but is probably the dud of the album. I recall it taking little effort to write but that also explains why it is a bit slight. Things get moody again with "Sad Old Sun" which is one of those songs whose vocal melody never quite repeats itself and I remember writing this and thinking how natural that flow felt and I actually had to make myself stop writing it. While I was blown away by that one, I don't think anyone else was. No worries, though, as this album is capped with "Last Call For Faith", a song that is a favorite of many (including my sister). I always had a hard time remembering the words so, to folks' chagrin, this did not often get played live, but it's a pretty epic tune and one of my favorite accomplishments.

While this particular RPM Challenge was pretty prolific, for some reason this album was still a tough one to make and it really came down to the wire. Completely lacking in any sort of idea for cover art, I went for simple clip art. While that does make for kind of a shitty album cover, I sorta dig the starkness of it.

This album became the first of my releases to be available on iTunes and, as it was the first, it was downloaded by many. It would take quite some time before I released another set to the streamers. This is another one of those albums that may not sit at the top of the FDM heap but is one that brings back a flood of memories and I hold this one very dear.
