THE PRETTY OF FOUR
i see you standing
staring all pretty-eyed
it doesn't change the way
i tie my shoes
or think of you
and the way we were
and it's a long way down
to the pretty of four

BEAVERHEAD
she came down to the riverside
holding in her hands, the great divide
she'd never know just what she made
in her hands
you'd never know just who she is
at her door
here she comes and she's taking it slower
take your shoes off, i don't mind
she keeps in her home, the third degree
handed in time way back to me
she'd never know how much she gave
in your hands
she'd never know just who i saved
at her door
here she comes and she's taking it slower
take your shoes off, i don't mind
she came too late, i forgot what i wore
gathered in numbers outside my door
you'd never know just what she'd say
in her hands
she'd never know just who it is
at her door
here she comes and she's taking it slower
take your shows off, i don't mind

Hold My Breath
05:27

HOLD MY BREATH
blue and silver
gold and candles
prepared for war
light another
pass me by
i can't stay anymore
you say i'm full
you say i'm shallow
whose turn is it now?
you say i'm quick to judge you
but i don't see you anyhow
it's alright, it's alright
i saved a penny for a rainy day
it's alright, it's alright
i gave you nothing but a sad mistake
it's alright, it's alright
i burned my bridges and i ran like hell
it's alright, it's alright
i'll hold my breath until the sun burns out
who are you to say i need you
just to stay alive?
and who am i to stay with nothing?
laugh just to survive
i came from nothing, building nothing
left to run and hide
i've often seen you spit
but now you're swallowing your pride
it's alright, it's alright
i stole your pennies from your rainy day
it's alright, it's alright
you left me nothing but a sad mistake
it's alright, it's alright
you burned my bridges and i ran like hell
it's alright, it's alright
i'll hold my breath until the sun burns out
there are no words that i could say
there's nothing to explain
call it strangers leaving strangers
fucked up, torn, insane
a heaven sent through hell
i swear i never lived through you
but you'd never walk away
with nothing left to misconstrue
it's alright, it's alright...

Sale Of The Century

SALE OF THE CENTURY
sara lies on top
but she forgot what it was all about
so long, it seemed so simple then
stepping out with a kind bud
to take you home
she seemed so shallow
and now she wonders why
i'm up for sale
don't try to touch me
don't try to hurt me now
don't try to tempt me
i'm the sale of the century
sara left no choice
her fragile voice
was so much darker than mine
so low, we seemed so foolish then
i never really cared for your last appeal
though it seemed so harmless
still i never wonder why i went up for sale
don't try to touch me
don't try to take me down
don't try to tempt me
i'm the sale of the century
sara lost her head
still everything she said was wrong
so long, she seemed so helpless
every time i came in to assume control
it's all so pointless
she knows exactly why i went up for sale
don't try to touch me
don't try to heal me now
don't try to tempt me
i'm the sale of the century

Parallel

PARALLEL
upside down and all around
you drove my will into the ground
nothing to do, no fools to blame
but i didn't even catch her name
we run and we run
and we run and we run
parallel
inside the house across the street
my mistress dances with her sheets
seventeen in round times two
and she is left without a clue
we run and we run
and we run and we run
parallel

Stacy's Dad

STACY'S DAD
stacy's dad lights the fireplace
but his life was not in vain
to save his soul
you'd conjure fifty thousand
points of light
boiling in the kettle
under razor wire
stacy's dad lights the fireplace
telling stories bought
a long long time ago
when famine spread
throughout his neighborhood
rehearse the scene
when she crawled back out that door
stacy's dad lights the fireplace
stacy's dad lights the fireplace
innocent young girls cry out
at the mess he made
burning candles, trenches overhead
too well too see too far
into the backwash of his mind
stacy's dad lights the fireplace

Simone (part three)

SIMONE (part three)
she left a riddle strange alone
beseiged a lullaby for all
scenes of lame
and castaway into the days
could never look for real
what's real behind those images you hide?
you know, you're never quiet alone
simone - see me away alone
simone - i cannot see
simone - see me out on sunday's tune
she sold her soul for bread and wine
attacked her conscience for a ride
scenes of blind faith, so real
to drift on silver sheets
and feel the slide in images you hide
insane, it's never quite the same
simone - feel you way alone
simone - i cannot hear
simone - hear me out on sunday's tune
sunday's tune
someday soon
i may write
she begged an angel for her rites
and cried to sleep with open eyes
scenes of pretense and now
foundation's weak, it starts to fall
in fall, you'll only fall alone
your image shatters on the floor
simone - sing to me back home
simone - i don't wanna know
simone - lead me out on sunday's tune
leave me shadows on your tomb
and i remember the first day now
leave me shadows on your tomb
and i remember the last day well
leave me shadows on your tomb
and lead me out on sunday's tune

Hypnotica

HYONOTICA
well, you left this town so long ago
i always tried to catch you but you got no soul
you called me here from god knows where
screaming "right now, yes, right now"
but who kept you counting as i followed you out
just begging to the city in a different amount
two times over that and another to pass
yes yes, until you shattered like a broken glass
and said "y'all get out now"
three, count em, four, into the five and dime
throw down a six and seven and a bottle of wine
two times over that and she left in some direction
well, i'm from the city and you're from the beach
and i always tried to catch you but's you're out of reach
so i carry myself, and you carry myself
and i carry to the funk and of the beat that goes like...
well, you always looked sexy in your 209
420 in your undies, i was always on time
to lay down my needle and catch your groove
for the playback, the honey stays so fresh and smooth
yeah, i'm from the village and you're from the sea
and i never tried to wonder what went over me
two times over that and another to pass
and a taste as sweet as sassafrass
you said, "y'all get out now"
my baby's just as begging as bob singletary
and she flashed a quick grin and giggled "on the contrary"
with her legs just as smooth as don perignon
she left me there groovin' all week long
well, i pulled out my hat and i drew her an eight
she said "it don't beat a nine and i'm getting late"
two times over that, i dropped my hat
and said "girl, you got no funk"
and check the tick-tock, look out now...
well, i know you're just a player with a funky disease
but i never met a woman who's a bigger tease
a 36, a 24, a hell of a ride, but she gave me the slide
and i looked her in the eye and said
"you don't see me playin' like a busted kid
and i won't cry to mama after what you did"
two times over that with a rat and a tat
and a sign on the door that says "get the funk out"
"y'all get out now"
so cry, baby, cry, coz i caught you in your own lie
you shot the scene and you don't stop ticking
to the top and the turn and you keep on burning yourself
and i laugh coz it's over
well, i'll run to the city, i'll run to the beach
and i'll never stop running til you're out of reach
two times over that and another to pass
you can keep with the funk and the beat that goes like...

How We Dream
04:05

HOW WE DREAM
she came like the weather
and i left my soul upstairs
to drown in waves of her arrival
she led me through eden
but spoke not a word of grace
god fear if i should ever find her
and this is how we dream in the summertime
she gave to my instincts
and took up her coat and ran
and made her way back to the junction
i called for my curtain
i called out to make a bow
god fear if i should ever find her
and this is how we dream in the summertime
i stopped by the station
no words came from my mouth
no vision scarred throughout this lifetime
she twisted my truth in lies
and tossed out my better judgement
god fear if i should ever find her
and this is how we dream in the summertime

Long Stem Rose

LONG STEM ROSE
she called herself dexter
but i knew her name was marie
she called me for breakfast
she called me to see her disease
i knew she was fronting
a pound or a dozen
long stem rose in a scene
i met her on wednesday
when he said she was so obscene
long stem rose in the garden
she's so visible
long stem rose at the banquet
holday, eden
long stem rose in the churchyard
she's so viable
long stem rose on a garden wall
she sang out to august
but i thought she sang to the trees
when she flew to the sun
she said she sailed the seven seas
well, i saw her fronting
two pennies for nothing
and beckon with ease
breaking her stride
she said i never lied to her enemies
long stem rose in the garden
she's so available
long stem rose at the banquet
holy to avalon
long stem rose in the churchyard
she's so vain, she's so vain
long stem rose on the wall
cry two tears for the rose under me
cry two tears for the garden wall
surrounding me
"hello! hello!"
hello, i call from my hole in the wall
just to say goodbye
long stem rose in the garden
weeping tangerine
long stem rose at the banquet
silent in eden
long stem rose in the churchyard
indivisible
long stem rose
she said goodbye, she said goodbye
after i said hello
she said goodbye, she said goodbye
after i said hello
what i never broke, i'd bend
to the silent watch, my friend
cry out
she said there's flowers in the pantry
cry out
she said there's no more til tomorrow
cry out
she keeps her roses under the cellar door
long stem rose tangled up in the wall
what i never broke i'd bend
to the silent watch, my friend
indivisible and hollow
indivisible, at least until tomorrow
indivisible in its restless call
invisible to a garden wall
she called herself dexter
but i knew her name was marie

Maria
05:13
|

MARIA
who gave at the altar?
who made the sacrificial vow?
who came to the inquest?
and what did he wear when he came around?
the night leave no prisoners
to hide behind a face
the night leave no remission
just a pressure-hold on grace
and it's all over now
but i would not be fair to stay
maria
courtesy is contageous
but so is your plague
it don't really matter
what kind of mess we made
the night leave no companion
no suspicion on my floor
the night leave no sacrifice
hung behind my door
and it's all over now
but i would not be fair to stay
maria
this diamond dream or a lullaby
behind these blood red eyes
confusion leaves behind
no silence, wit, or lies
the night leaves no romances
no burning in its cage
the night leaves no salvation
just a silent hold on rage
and it's all over now
but i would not be fair to stay
maria

Blood Red And Indigo

BLOOD RED AND INDIGO
i didn't know, i didn't care
i wrote a letter but i left it there
i wasn't sure what was your name
yeah, i forgot that it had changed
just like that light
up on display
between the shutters
and the shadows in the way
and like a fool
i stood aside and sighed
i drank the wine
from the servant's cup
it tasted bitter
blood red and indigo
bring us your weak
bring us your poor
and lay between the way
til you forget what it's for
this carnival of wax and wings
this fragile wind can take most anything
beyond the sum of what it is
and what it was before we got to it, yeah
i turned away
from the menace eye
it stares you bitter
blood red and indigo
bring us your fools
bring forth your prize
the price is nothing
if you size it up right
just like the fog sings to the rain
this hammer never falls in vain
but lies in wait, and lies await
the everyman's accomplice once again
i spun the stone
and stoned the wall
it knocks you bitter
blood red and indigo
bring up the silence
bring down the war
there's nothing else
beyond the door
except the truth
accept the blame
we're all companions
in this stupid game
so beautiful
we're laughing while the
world rolls by
in blood red and indigo...

Fortune Hunter
09:43
|
|||
FORTUNE HUNTER
weary fortune hunter rests
time to call a draw
forgetting what he saw
out beyond the bridge
where all those stories seem to end
somewhere close around the bend
his face was fair, his shoes had soul
and soles to run along
when his feet did not belong
he swapped the sun and left it where
no one would dare to find
yeah, he does it all the time
fortune hunter
he tore the air asunder
he keeps on down the line
we did the deal
stony fortune hunter fords
another weathered road
and then he watches it implode
aching like a setting sun
he turned and faced the wind
and tried to do it all again
and again, the wind explained to him
in gestures, some were lies
he pulled a stone from his disguise
excused himself and carried on
in ball-pin hammer tales
that spilled and tipped the scales
fortune hunter
on the other side of wonder
he's got a pocket full of gold
we did the deal
panic fortune hunter
sees the fury in his eyes
is nothing more than compromise
like waiting for the wolves
to beg and bring him to his knees
or kick it up a few degrees
he leaves his shadow crying
in the corner of the void
and then he sat there, paranoid
this fortune never feels the way
it ought to, and it shows
so he clicks his heels and goes
fortune hunter
he plays it out like thunder
he woke the demon on his sleeve
and he did the deal
fortune hunter
we did the deal
