PRIMITIVE ROAD she walks like a fractured ghost on the stones of the primative road fragments of elegy and scars of her legacy on the stones, when the dam overflowed it's like a drug in the water and she buries her purse in the mud on the cracks of the sidewalk in the thick of the dragon's blood she skips like a child and she shakes her load on the stones of the primative road she opens up her soul in the bars and cafes and retreats with the turtles and toads it's like a push to be pushy she took it all away to dispose and returns her attention to the tracks in the middle of her toes she sees familiar faces passing by on her primitive road in the sky she begs like a pauper and stings like a queen ask her, she'll never say just what that means she keeps herself crazy, she is always amazing breaking the tension with her sweet aquamarine she lies like a child, or another of those on the stones of the primative road she breaks all the barricades and blocks all the signs and cries when the traffic has slowed it's a prop to be proper she's punching the clock in the row don't try to stop her, before she takes her moment to glow she sees familiar faces passing by on her primative road in the sky -2/11/07

10,000 SPARROWS i hear my baby, she's calling out for me like 10,000 sparrows in the breeze she picks me up and knocks me down i keep my ear to the open ground talking tough and proud and oh so loud she's got the ways and the desire to please like 10,000 sparrows in the breeze she'll chase me down and out and around searching for her voice and waiting for a sound holding out, holding up, holding on 10,000 sparrows in the breeze from the wires to the air to the tops of all the trees 10,000 sparrows in the breeze doing anything, anything they please she looks like a diamond right after the freeze or like 10,000 sparrows in the breeze she'll chime in and we'll shine on we'll talk and laugh along speaking out, speaking up, and speaking of 10,000 sparrows in the breeze from the wires to the air to the tops of all the trees 10,000 sparrows in the breeze doing anything, anything they please -2/11/07

WEST OF YOUR LAST STEP somewhere west of your last step it's lying alone in the dirt shrouded in dust and debris and waiting for the right time to hurt somewhere west of your last step lies a baby on the ground with a gun the last of the playground misfits can't be bothered to be outdone falling down and spun around looking out for the brighter sound too calm to connect, too cool to collect pushing the petals yet calling the shots west of your last step somewhere west of your last step sits a window shattered out holes in the floor and a knot in the door and the ghosts of the sinners about somewhere west of your last step they chain your thoughts up on the wall here we come - escaping, barely scraping nails on boards back in the yellow hall falling down and spun around staring out from the hole in the ground too slow to console, too quick to control hardly they're lost but never found west of your last step somewhere west of your last step they're chaining your thoughts to the wall the ones that escaped, the ones who are scraping their nails on the board in the hall they cry, they're not wicked they're only misused they move like a flicker in the bricks of their shoes begging and pleading for offers they cannot refuse -2/6/07

13th Panic 04:06
13th PANIC take a look beyond your window is the weather still the same? they say it's 28 below but that's a number, just a name divide the cost, is it still plenty to crash and curse and make some noise to see it through the fog, we're spending fields of green for our noxious toys strike it down, strike it down react in vain and turn around keep it down and hush the sound take it out and shush the hounds another one to captivate the crown another plastic panic is abound is it a panic or a picnic? the daily news is all the same is it the static that we nitpick? or some revolution, evolution game it's never fresh, just something that we push and push until our thoughts explode he's standing on the bench, he's happy for the fever in the trenches and the roads strike it down, strike it down react in vain and turn around keep it down and hush the sound take it out and shush the hounds another one to captivate the crown another plastic panic is abound what kind of words do sinners sing when the sin is such that anger barely spells any sort of knowledge interfering the ignorance beyond the aching bell talk is cheap in this revival press the pedal closer to the floor not only for your vague survival but to stave the bitter ravens atyou door strike it down, strike it down react in vain and turn around keep it down and hush the sound take it out and shush the hounds another one to captivate the crown another plastic panic is abound -2/7/07

SISTER MARY CERAMIC sister mary ceramic got the handle on the quick fix light a candle and call for a muse sister mary ceramic got the handle on the quick fix on the road to redemption or the back of the blues i thought i heard the red bell ringing, tolling for the ones who've gone awry you can hear the echo on the walls of the motel and read the resolution in the sky i thought i heard her singing bringing joy to eyes alive and double wide wash your hands to keep from stinging and divert your path before the two collide i thought i saw her dancing cheap romance in cellars deeper than this well it wasn't so much dancing, more like prancing on the edges of her shell i thought i felt her presence in the mezzanine or in the parking lot the evidence was lessened by the simple fact that she would rather not sister mary ceramic got the handle on the quick fix light a candle and call for a muse sister mary ceramic got the handle on the quick fix on the road to redemption or the back of the blues -2/9/07

about

In February 2007, I undertook my very first RPM Challenge. Started the year prior, the idea is to create an album from scratch, from inception to release, in one month. I immediately dove right in and knocked out about thirty songs that month, about half of which appeared on the album, The Importance Of Being. The rest of the songs just kinda sat around, until December 2008, when this set was recorded.

At this point, I was two months into unemployment (after the closing of Olsson's), and three months into recording with my new Zoom 8-track, and there had been a great deal of recording - the "Sofas On 45" single, as well as the albums, The Sound Of One Hand Clapping, Glass Parade, Supernova, and Low. Each of those albums addressed a particular songwriting project, and this one was no different. Except for one thing:

About five songs into the recording, I started a new job. It took so long to get acclimated to my new 9-5 work life and eventually the plan to make this into an album dissolved. So an EP it became.

All five of the songs on this EP were leftovers from that first RPM Challenge, though they all originally came towards the end of those writing sessions, after most of the album's songs had been written. The title track was particularly tough to record (it is a very difficult song to play) but the end result turned out quite alright.

"10,000 Sparrows" is a nice little country-folk ditty and is pretty catchy. "West Of Your Last Step" is pretty much a jam song. It's a good one to go in and out of when you are jamming in E (similar to "Coltrane", which used to be juxtaposed with this one often). "13th Panic" shares a bit of melody with another song, written around the same time, but has a cool chorus and is kinda fun. The last song, "Sister Mary Ceramic", is not only one of my favorite titles but is one of my favorite songs. It's goofy, but also deep, and catchy as all hell.

There have been times over the years when I've thought about recording another five songs and making this an album, but I've always been a "play it where it lay" kind of guy, so the EP stays intact.

In 2017, however, that initial batch of songs was revisited for the RPM Challenge, resulting in an album called Disastering. To date, these are the only two releases (of the modern FDM era) to feature this material, but one of these days the rest of those songs will get their due.

Fun fact: CD copies of this EP feature a hidden track - a cover of "Not A Lot Goin' On" by Craig Northey, better known as the theme song from Corner Gas. There are still copies for sale, y'know...

The songs from this album are drawn from leftover material,
written for the 2007 RPM Challenge, which resulted in the
album, The Importance Of Being. This is an unfinished album,
the last of the Fall 2008 Unemployment Sessions. Upon starting
a new full-time job, recording ground to a halt. At some point,
maybe, this album will be finished. Until then, it's an EP. Stay tuned...
