Slender 04:01
SLENDER there've been times when i wanted to fall down there've been times when i thought i was all out there've been times when i thought it was all so long ago then i saw it was just a reflection of another bad dream in the garden it took me back, for a second, i thought i was all alone but at the edge of the fog was an angel she'd been standing there all of the time at the edge of the fog was an angel i can't bear to break this slender line there've been times when i hid in the shadows there've been times when i took it for something else there've been times when i thought i was on some other road then i heard that voice in the wild wind talking like a ghost but i knew it was not then another deal with the devil before i had to go but at the edge of the fog was an angel she'd been standing there all of the time at the edge of the fog was an angel i can't bear to break this slender line there've been times when i dreamt of a way in there've been times when i sang of the fire scars there've been times when i shook it off and just let it go then i knew it was all in my head some rag-tag poet with his hand in my pot of gold i took him out and i left him dead on the side of the road but at the edge of the fog was an angel she'd been standing there all of the time at the edge of the fog was an angel i can't bear to break this slender line -2/8/13

BETWEEN 8th AND 9th we've seen a million cars go rolling down those summer roads we pacified our urge to flag them down we ran the gauntlet, laughing all the way down to the row where the piper robbed the pedlar of his crown instead we took a walk around the town just killin' time and wandering around and dancing at the first sign of that sweet, sweet sound mama, take a memo in the dirt out on the ground we captured every ghost that haunted us throughout the years we mocked them and reduced them all to tears and missed our only chance to infiltrate all that he hears we grabbed the wheel before they got to steer instead we took a walk around the town just killin' time and wandering around and dancing at the first sign of that sweet, sweet sound mama, take a memo in the dirt out on the ground we knocked ourselves about and gave the poets room to shout we pressed them for the truth, then took them out they promised us a miracle but charged us at the spout we turned around and left without a doubt instead we took a walk around the town just killin' time and wandering around and dancing at the first sign of that sweet, sweet sound mama, take a memo in the dirt out on the ground -2/5/13

Scissorcut 03:50
SCISSORCUT i got a dollar in my pocket i got my foot on a hand grenade it never meant much when i bought it but you can see all the mess that it made the diamonds in the doorway and all the demons on the bench i tricked the devil to see things your way and then i blamed him for the stench we took time out of the riot to take a photo of the parade in the dream i was a fighter pilot but really i was just playing charades you see, me, i don't really go for all the blood and the glory and games i'd sooner turn away than go to war but if i go i'll be taking names i took a breath and i made my exit between the smoke and the mines and the maze somehow i lost it when i nearly wrecked it my lizard brain was calling the plays i reawoke and i saw the sunrise peeking from the hole in the lines of this cage i know i saw it with my own eyes sometimes it's fear that rebuttals the rage i left my shoes out in the gutter now the floor it is part of my feet i tried to sing but i could hardly stutter still it was a sound that was oh so sweet i took the prize and i made my way out of the maze, to somewhere far away i never thought to picture what it was all about i just planted myself to stay -2/8/13

HALFWAY TO THE MOON AND BACK halfway to the moon and back we got a ball and jack, we got the slack and a wandering tide gimme gimme just a piece of mind i'm like a fall guy, i don't mind i'm taking my time, time my sweet sweet time i'm staring down the barrel for the first time wondering why, why i don't know why i'm here, wasting time again halfway to the moon and back i ain't looking back into the deep and the devious black so wack, i'm going right back right back to the scene of the crime yeah, you look so fine like a seraphim stumbling across that line, so fine, so fine now i know why i'm wasting time again jumping at the gun's no fun when you got the time and staring at the sun's gonna make you blind halfway to the moon and back we got the black jack, and a case of the blue light hard sell, you just can't tell if it's gold or another cold cheap farewell oh well, oh well, you just can't tell to late to get bent or raise hell, raise hell oh well, doh, you just don't know why i'm wasting time again -2/8/13

FORWARD TO THE SUN time and time again we find we're hanging from the horse's blind again beneath the banks of memories to the brittle, broken, brothers of the wind like castanets, we slack and clack and wait until they bring us back the one road, forward to the sun forward to the sun forward to the ones who make and break our stride don't shake it up, don't stay inside don't hide out like the ones we're always going on about forward, cried the jailer in the sky we never thought to wonder why we sit our spell and then erode complaining that the road is far too wide still the traffic snarls, and it's gnarled up the clown sits sipping from his cup there's platinum in the wine forward to the sun forward to the ones who make and break our stride don't shake it up, don't stay inside don't hide out like the ones we're always going on about tiny, like the drops of rain cascading down this ancient window pane yet enormous like this chorus singing out the gospel in a broken chain where the links are sometimes lost behind the bullets and the frost exhausting time, now forward to the sun forward to the ones who make and break our stride don't shake it up, don't stay inside don't hide out like the ones we're always going on about -2/8/13

about

As mentioned in the notes for Forward To The Sun, there were a lot of songs recorded for that album, a few of which didn't make the cut (several more were written but not recorded). This little EP was the first time since 2004 that a single would be released from an FDM album.

The lead track, "Slender", is the same version as on the album. I was really hoping that song could take off but of course it did not. No worries. This track is followed up by the punchy, driving "Between 8th And 9th", which was written about the NYC trip my sister and I made, in sub-zero temperatures, to see moe. perform at the old Best Buy Theatre. That was a hell of a trip and the song is pretty cool.

"Scissorcut" sits in the middle of this EP. This was the second song written that utilized this title (I had totally forgotten about the 2008 song when this one was written; this one is better). This is a very different song and I remember being really psyched as this was coming about. The lyric is a different sort, and one that continues to impress me, so many years later. That's not necessarily the same with "Halfway To The Moon And Back", which sits at the #4 slot on this EP. This is a bit of a hyper song, with a funky groove, and a somewhat obnoxious lyric. This song is actually quite a jam but there is no question why this song was left off the album.

This EP closes out with the full-length version of "Forward To The Sun", which features about eight minutes of jamming once the song starts to wrap up. This was a lot of fun to do but it kinda goes on a bit too long, and the album itself was already long anyway, so it made sense to edit it. Honestly, the edit is much better (i often skip the full version when it comes up in the shuffle).

When I printed the artwork, which aesthetically matches Forward To The Sun, the icon in the middle of the cover (as well as the text on the reverse) came out too light to clearly see, so this EP never quite got the push it should have gotten (i think i put this on the merch table once or twice). Fortunately, the streaming era has helped to rectify that. Dig!
