Supernova 04:51
SUPERNOVA if you look in to the sun you will see these pools spill down on everyone in the way that we move and breathe it refracts in our eyes and knocks down all the trees "hello", he said "hello", she bled on the floor of the cave where they left her so long ago "i know", she said, "i know" we fled through the barricades where they keep out the glow and ice and the flame you know it's just a temporary win in this extraordinary game and the sun shines down and the sun shines down til the sun explodes in supernova and the sun shines down and the sun shines down and we all wait for the beginning of a temporary extraordinary window to the wind, yeah it's like a wordless voice in a garden the maze of spring leaves little to imagine we do our best to reassign all the talkers another dingy corner in the back of our thoughts yeah, yeah, we got a hold on the sunlight at least we think we've got it buried deep in the pocket yeah, and we're moving like wolves to tear away the king from the kingdom and the lighthouse if you know what we're on about and the sun shines down and the sun shines down til the sun explodes in supernova and the sun shines down and the sun shines down and we all wait for the beginning of a temporary extraordinary window to the wind, yeah and we think about all the years gone by and we wish we could have stayed in the back with all the blown-out cars at the end of a dirty bar it smells like paradise so you better play nice... -6/9/08

The 44th 05:27
THE 44th well, here we are another fringe, another line we rode too far and pulled the curtains over time we felt it out just to believe it could be done and so it's done, and it's done you know, we're not the only ones to see the light of an ordinary tide as we rewrite the story nothing else could ever lead us to believe we did it wrong because it's everything we need for this high and extraordinary life there's nothing else in this high and extraordinary life there's nothing else so the patience that we bring is all we need, it's everything to be in line with all the wonders of the world we're doin' fine and all the banners, they are swirled there's nothing else but to believe it can be done and so it's done, and so it's done the new redemption has begun and the light of this ordinary tide turns an ugly storm into a sight for the sorest of all eyes and now it's time to peel away our old disguise for this high and extraordinary life there's nothing else in this high and extraordinary life there's nothing else coz the lion's at the door excuse the mess out on the floor renew the cheapest, old rapport and settle all the scores well, here we are another dawn, another day we've travelled far and sometimes we've gone astray it's something else just in believing that it's done and so it's done, and it's done return the giant to the sun and the light of this ordinary tide as we rewrite the story like some new spark of history like some new blanket we see times they are just beginning the light of the winner's eyes and the light of this ordinary tide turns an ugly storm into a high and extraordinary life there's nothing else in this high and extraordinary life there's nothing else into a high and extraordinary high and extraordinary high and extraordinary life there's nothing else to this disaster that we leave there's plenty noble to achieve if nothing else... -11/17/08

CAUSE AND EFFECT no.34 throw a line out, will you please, my darling? reel me in away from the abyss we're baring teeth and slightly snarling like we captured everything we ever missed if this is truth, than what's a lie for? to be left out, scratching at the door? if this is it, then what's to die for? when they send us, in our sleep back to the war cause and effect it's a three fingered bet like a once-idle threat or a strung-out vignette like a white silhouette or a host of regrets are they slipping, are they set? we could call it roulette but we're not there quite yet hold my head up right now, my darling make me feel your love from deep within beyond the lust, beyond the quarreling into the mire of the dust we left it in if this is right, than what's the wrong for? to be left out, scratching at the door? if this is wealth, then what's that gold for? to send us, kicking, screaming, writhing to the war cause and effect it's a three fingered bet like a once-idle threat or a strung-out vignette like a white silhouette or a host of regrets are they slipping, are they set? we could call it roulette but we're not there quite yet sing to me of sweetness now, my darling bring to me a piece of peace of mind when all the others turn to warring we can stop and turn and leave it all behind if we're the heroes, what are we here for? to be left out, scratching at the door? if this is life, than what's to live for? just to let them send us back into the war? cause and effect it's a three fingered bet like a once-idle threat or a strung-out vignette like a white silhouette or a host of regrets are they slipping, are they set? we could call it roulette but we're not there quite yet -3/16/08

Highway 29 03:39
HIGHWAY 29 strung out on highway 29 loose ends take control again don't ask me, coz i'm feeling pretty fine there's nothing that can really hold me down if you believe your bones then you've heard it all before strung out on highway 29 that diner smell, it's sickening and the traffic, it's a crime, for sure you can feel it thicken each and every day if you believe your bones then you've heard it all before two times lost three on the ground we've paid the cost in reds and browns in worn out shoes we took the chance it's a brand new blues everybody dance, now strung out on highway 29 'twixt seven corners and the sticks sometimes it's a long and lonely ride and sometimes we're just wicked if you believe your bones then you've heard it all before two times lost three on the ground we've paid the cost in reds and browns in worn out shoes we took the chance it's a brand new blues everybody dance, now -2/28/08

Impossible 04:30
IMPOSSIBLE taking the long way round the signs it seems impossible to gauge pressing your nails into the hides of all the passengers and planes what once was an arrow is now an eye blink twice and you just might hesitate to drink in the light of the morning face it seems impossible, no, wait til the light comes screaming out across the plains til the knife that's in your back calls out your name til the wonders of your voice crawl down the drain staring at strangers in the street you can't find a single thing to say dreaming of lions at your feet it's just a plot to wish away what takes a lifetime to build breaks down in a million different ways a slap in the face of the human race it seems impossible, no, wait til the mud they sling dissolves into the lake til the voices in their heads collapse and shake til the wisest of the fools is left awake taking a stand to claim defeat it seems impossible today everyone's right in their own eyes what's worse is they just won't go away it reads like a novel where the pages at the end are torn and frayed we make it up as we go along it seems impossible, no, wait til the morning when the new day takes its shape til the night when all that's left to do is scrape til the moment when it's easy to escape -2/4/08

Afterglow 07:01
AFTERGLOW somewhere in the garden she is sucking up the air her hands and feet reveal a tangle, eyes a fiery glare and she stops and shakes in wonder and keeps walking down the stairs the afterglow is fading over there please, my dear just wait a moment 'fore you grin again it's time to catch our breath and soak the sound of violins when she sings, she can evoke the voice of seven evil twins and the afterglow is fading in berlin wine and candleabra martha's got a gun it reminds me of an opera where nobody won and no one's gonna, yet the afterglow a fading silhouette tiny drops of burgundy on virgin cheshire tongues brings to mind the sweeping and the way the fire stung and leaves, amidst the root of all that's evil here among the afterglow is fading on the young heavy steps and wired grace take pause along the way they smoke their cigarettes and catch the last act of the play the part where maggie chokes and daddy don't know what to say the afterglow is fading on LA twenty paces over aaron shot him dead on the banks of ol' weehawken where they lost their heads and no placed their bets the afterglow a fading silhouette this kind of evil never grins that kind of saint, he never wins but he'll try and try again below the moon and stars the revellers all lose control the feel it in their hearts and minds but never in their soul that cracks and crumbles on the floor of that old dancing hole the afterglow is fading on the knoll wisdom can be abstract when the facts not at light when the grey is in the way and there's no need for black and white to illustrate the ones who beg and the ones who stop and fight the afterglow is fading in the night coffee kiss and smoky serenades in the parlour with the angels and grenades it's like a sleep-induced parade the afterglow is fading in the shade -3/3/08

SOMETIMES YOU JUST DON'T KNOW just once when you feel you've lost your game it's up to us to clear your tarnished name and when it ends you may notice it's the same you've got no friends or at least no one to blame sometimes you just don't know the way the wind is gonna blow sometimes you just don't know the way it goes right here we draw a circle 'round our fears and reel it in every dozen or so years we took the prize but left it drooling in the field we close our eyes and dream of dishing some new deal sometimes you just don't know the way the wind is gonna blow sometimes you just don't know the way it goes and the way we feel when we're on our heels when we stoop and steal the last squeaky wheel the cards reveal that we've done our deal and it's all too real aloof we never stop or seek the truth or burn it down and drive a nail into the tooth and wear the crown that the king left in the road we took him down and left him crying in code sometimes you just don't know the way the wind is gonna blow sometimes you just don't know the way it goes -3/16/08

BEFORE THE WORLD ENDS ...and when the morning comes again we'll sit and watch the world end and talk about the memories that we have from way back when and if it's cold, we'll move around in a figure eight, out on the ground and crush to the sweet november sound ...and when the morning comes again we'll start again and clear new ways we'll soak it in and set up brighter days if you want, we'll talk about old times and sort it out, and draw new lines and dance around a barrel of old wine it's the last of the brand new, modern days it's the last of the stark, newfangled ways it's the last of the din of sweet decay before the world ends ...and when the morning comes again will we be sitting so serene or will we wither like those giants that we've seen we'll never know til we make it there and pony up to gawk and stare and breathe in the last air that we breathe it's the last of the brand new, modern days it's the last of the stark, newfangled ways it's the last of the din of sweet decay before the world ends ...and when the morning comes again will you remember me, my friend or will your memory and your spirit both rescind to the void we can't avoid so we're left sitting there and all annoyed it's dark, and it's brighter than the sun it's the last of the brand new, modern days it's the last of the stark, newfangled ways it's the last of the din of sweet decay before the world ends ...and when the morning comes again we'll sit and watch the world end... -3/3/08

I MISUNDERSTOOD MYSELF i thought i heard a rumble in the reaches of the cave where the seraphims all stumbled through the stationary wave and the moment that they got out was the moment they were saved i thought i heard a tremor through the crackle of my spine that led me to remember that she said that she was mine and the moment that she said it was the moment i went blind i thought i heard a movement in the belly of the beast that bellowed like a tuvan throat singer from the east and the moment that i caught it was the moment that it ceased i thought i heard a singer in the corner of my mind who called to the redeemers and the ones they left behind and the moment that they gave in was the moment they combined i thought i heard a rustle in the forest of my soul where my thoughts and words all bustle and fall down the rabbit hole and the moment that we shook it was the moment we were whole -3/16/08

about

Chris Anderson's 31st full-length album.

In the early days of 2008, I was totally without any sort of proper recording gear. My last 8-track had died, taking a couple of projects with it, and I had not yet acquired the Zoom unit (that I still use). So all recordings that were done were solo acoustic, live to a single mic, recorded on Windows Sound Recorder (remember that?). It was in this format that my second RPM Challenge album, A Thousand Heels Abound, was created. Once that project was done, the floodgates opened and dozens of songs came flying forth. These were all recorded in a similar manner and released on the BG Label (see titles such as Parasites, Winsome Loser, Cautionary Witchcraft, Arpeggiation, Cannonball, The Takedown, & Bleak). Each one is an album unto its own and I really dig those a lot.

On the first day of August 2008, I began working with the new 8-track and swiftly created the "Sofas On 45" single, as well as The Sound Of One Hand Clapping and Glass Parade. On the last day of September, Olsson's Books & Records closed up and I was, after eleven years, out of a job. The market was tough and it was two months before I found new employment. Times were slim but at least they offered me an opportunity to catch up on recording, while getting to know the new machine in the process.

The third album project that came about was based on that body of work that had been conjured in the spring, as well as a couple of songs that had come since. This was titled Supernova, after the lead track, and it's basically an album of singles (that happens to also flow quite well). All of the songs have a certain immediacy to them that makes them really stand out.

The title track came about one morning, as I was listening to a bunch of unknown MySpace bands and some of the styles that I heard made their way into this catchy little song.

"The 44th" was written after Obama won the 2008 election. This is a song of hope and of celebration and I did my best to channel Chris Squire in some of the bass work.

The rest of the songs come from the spring sessions and kicks off with the fiery, political "Cause And Effect no.34", which is one of my all time proudest moments. This chorus just knocks me out every time.

"Here Comes The Flood" is a slower one and I kinda dropped the ball on the recording, making it a bit plodding and not entirely exciting (did it really have to be seven minutes long?), but it does have a lot of emotion to it and I quite like the song.

"It Never Has To Be That Way" is an anomaly as it features a synth on it. This was the first to do so in at least a decade and was a lot of fun (this would carry over to the next album).

"Highway 29" was written about being drunk in Arlington, late at night, back in my twenties. This is another one of the songs on this album that has really stuck with me and I dig it a lot.

"Impossible" is the one song on this set that previously appeared on A Thousand Heels Abound (the rest of the songs were written in the weeks after) and I really dig this recording. It has a bit of a REM vibe that I always love to mess with.

"Afterglow" is a weird, moody little song that is sort of about the last minute before the end of the world. I really like the spookiness of the groove.

"Sometimes You Just Don't Know" is, on the surface, an incredibly cheesy song, with a power ballad kind of feel, but really is much deeper than that. The vocal melody of the verse shows up in another song, written around that time (I won't tell you what it is - you gotta hunt for it).

"Before The World Ends" is a fun little rocker that was a blast to write and even more so to play. Like "Afterglow", this song also takes place in right before the end of the world but, while that song is just a portrait in words, this one is more pensive, more reflective, a bit more sentimental. I really like this lyric.

The album ends with "I Misunderstood Myself" which, I believe, started out as a title, on my perpetual list of potential titles. I did my best to channel Up-era REM on this one, with the minimal drum machine and cheap Casio keyboard. It sounds completely different than anything on the album (or elsewhere) but is a really cool way to take the album out.

While this album was completed quickly, it was not released for over two years. At the time, I was not performing live, there was no such thing as Bandcamp, and I wasn't working in a record store anymore, so I didn't really have any good means of distributing it, until I returned to the stage in 2012.

Supernova may have come around at a very prolific time, but it still stands out as one of my favorite FDM albums. Hope ya dig it!

Special thanks to Olsson's for closing up shop and giving me the opportunity to record this album. Thanks also to Winter ice and gravity for making me break my ankle and thus allowing me the time to finally finish this project. And thanks also to my beloved Krissy, who put up with me throughout both of those periods and oh so many more. You are the best!
