about

In 2018, I was deep in the thick of what I called the "anniversary series" of albums. Initially commemorating the 25th anniversary of FDM, these albums saw old songs re-recorded, along with other songs from the same time period, and fashioned into new albums. Many, many albums came into being this way, many of them quite good.

One such album is called Standing On The Fence That Divides Love And Hate. The source for this album is a huge songwriting binge I went on in 2008. Writing for that year's RPM Challenge, which resulted in an acoustic album called A Thousand Heels Abound, long extended past the album's sessions with several additional albums & EPs written and demoed (all available on the BG label), languishing in the vault for a great many years.

Some of those songs were recorded later that year for the Supernova album, and more of them were addressed in 2012 on an album called Walking In The Devil's Shoes. Standing On The Fence That Divides Love And Hate was the third album to draw from this material and features some of the best tracks from the batch.

Despite already having a release under that title, "A Thousand Heels Abound" was the definite choice for the single and, to make matters even more complicated, even more material from 2008 was recorded for use as b-sides on a single that ended up featuring nine songs and running the length of an album.

Two of these b-sides were recorded during sessions for Walking In The Devil's Shoes, but left off of that album. The rest of these tracks were recorded specifically for this release. Most of them are a bit weird but they have character and I dig them a lot.

This set was initially released by Flyingdeer Records and after that label folded and this was pulled from releases, the b-side tracks were all distributed throughout a series of five rarities compilations. So those tracks are out there, but I still felt that this EP should still exist in this form, so here we are.

Oh yeah, "a thousand heels abound" is a phrase that I coined, back when I initially wrote the song, and it basically means "full steam ahead". Let's go!
