Off The Cuff 02:23
OFF THE CUFF off the cuff we're waking up we see our surroundings sittin' up, fallin' over the top to where we once were high on a mountain wasting time off the cuff we've seen enough these years they all combine and wrap around the soggy ground it seeps up to our knees high on a mountain wasting time -2/4/05

Triangles 02:37
TRIANGLES some days we're circles sing it: oh yeah, oh yeah some days we're squares some days we're right there right there now some days we're running scared some days we don't see it there for all the signs some days it's cool to break out oh yeah oh yeah some days we're waking up to islands, eyelids closed some days we see it all the time and some days we wonder why this little slice of doubt we can really live without no serpents scratch the surface not this time this little slice of doubt we can really live without at least until we leave it all behind some days we're reconstructing oh yeah, oh yeah some days we recreate we're hiding, hiding out some days we laugh about the time some days we'd rather fly -2/4/05

TALK ABOUT THE LANDSLIDE wake up! don't think i know you you're shaking like a storm between the trees when you hide from the world you only lie to yourself bodies, minds, and souls don't come for free release you from this garden hardened walls will sometimes fall don't fall alone - i'll be there waiting to catch and take you home we're gonna sit right down on the side of the road and talk about the landslide we're gonna sit right down on the side of the road and while away the moments of our lives out there don't seem so cold we're splitting hairs and boarding up the doors when the wind shakes the walls who'll be there to take the fall? or bargain life for lights and open sores return me to this garden pardon's never get you far too far is never far enough and far enough's too far to hide we're gonna sit right down on the side of the road and talk about the landslide we're gonna sit right down on the side of the road and while away the moments of our lives you can't walk alone there's dirt and ghosts and fog for most the way you'll make it there someday until then, lie right here the air will soon be clear it's not an answer, yes or no just take some time to grow and to step aside we're gonna sit right down on the side of the road and talk about the landslide we're gonna sit right down on the side of the road and while away the moments of our lives talk about the slide... -november 2004

STARING AT THE STORM FROM THE BACK DOOR staring at the storm from the back door we've been there a hundred times before looking at the clock, try and wonder why there's no clouds in the southern sky see them run, see them spread time to dissipate looking for some hope in the hopeless, gaping night they go the distance in the night laughing at the wolves at the other door they've been there a week or maybe more take another shot, stop and look around cultivate your fears like flowers in the ground see them grow, see them wrestle with their "yes or no"s falling over faces in the faceless dark of night they go the distance in the night they solve great mysteries of the night they count their mistresses at night for every instance is a barter with a curse or a wrangle with a spellbound demon on the sleeve of another dull crown-wearing catch him if you will he's got a long way to fall after all, he's at the top and he's got the eyes to see through the night staring at the storm from the back door... -11/22/04

OVER THE DEAD TOWN i wanna see the sea go crashing through your head i wanna go there with you watch you as you levitate no need to look away or hesitate again you know as well as i that it would never be this way again we're gonna watch the lights go down over this town we're gonna watch the lights go down over this dead town i wanna walk with you along the dirty roads and we can talk for hours on end if you suppose we can fly like the buzzards circle round this dead end town stopping only for a bite of kings and queens and crowns we're gonna watch the lights go down around this town we're gonna watch the lights go down over this dead town i wanna teach, i want you to teach me all you know you can show me things i've never seen before i wanna take you for a walk and walk around the faded monuments that litter this old town we're gonna watch the lights go down over this town we're gonna watch the lights go down over this dead town and i never knew the reason why and i don't expect to fly i don't wanna fly and i never knew the damage done and i walk just a damaged son on the edge of all this dirty, no good reinvented washed-up sound feet on the ground we'll sit and watch the dimming lights go down on this dead town -11/17/04

KEEP IT SIMPLE ain't got no tv and we don't pick up the phone our spirits escalate when no one else is home leave it by the back door if you wanna spend a moment here or there wash the newsprint from your face and tie back all your hair we're looking backwards and we keep it simple every day up with the sun, we're taking in the morning steam lies like a baby, holding hands with the redeemer leaving by the back door amidst silent tones and grunts and coughs and sighs you can tell him that you need him just don't look him in the eyes we're walking backwards and we keep it simple every day fold your hands and keep on down the old dirt road halfway from here to there a day's walk, so i'm told carry only nothing but the best essentials you and you alone and let the spirit guide you til you find yourself back home we're living backwards and we keep it simple everyday -11/9/04

MAN OVERBOARD lie on the side - just take it easy this old engine's gonna blow again gonna take it in gonna make it real again if you wanna see why we're twisting and turning just look thru the window at the oilfields burning going over your head over your head over the wind over the border over the water looking over my shoulder the cold gets cold but we're not getting older anymore now i've gone overboard is that what you want? i've got what you need right here let's take a walk between these two ears we can wallow and balk at all the poisonous years looking out at the rain it seems so long ago when we tested the art of dying and flying over mountainous rows it brings a chill to my toes and a tear to my eye looking over the day over the houses over the clouds over the faces over the shrouds i took a pretty hard look then stuffed it away like an old textbook and now i've gone overboard is that what you want? i've got what you need right here over the wind over the border over the water over my shoulder over the houses over the clouds over the faces over the shrouds over the neptune over the sea over the rivers and over me over the notion over the sword over the ocean overboard now i've gone overboard is that what you want? i've got what you need right here -11/22/04

Marking Time 04:42
MARKING TIME you can go the distance while still marking time if you insist, we'll wash whatever's left of mine you can fold your hands like a motherless child scratching at the surface of substance and style you can watch the clock go screaming thru the day you can try to stalk me from a million miles away you can talk your talk you can walk with gods and saints or you can keep on marking time coz it isn't what it ain't this time and distance is so long - too long to wait and if we count our pennies we can go there you can wring me out leave me out to dry the sun'll do it's business while we wallow in our eyes you can dance with angels you can tango with the king and buy and sell the devil fake gold, knockoff diamond rings you can pay the piper for a hit three minute song and if he begs for more you can tell him he's been there too long you can close your eyes and dream about the day that everything will fall together in that perfect way this time and distance it's no match for what's beyond and if we toss aside our pennies we can still go there you can leave alone me and everything it don't matter much if you see all the venom that it brings you can tie one on wrestle with your thoughts feast on all my good intentions as often as you're not you can write a song full of bitter, scathing words or you can look me in the eyes and know it's lightyears from the worst you can speak the truth and swallow all your fears or waste another lifetime standing there and not right here this time and distance is too far, too far away and if you count your pennies you can wipe those tears away there's no one left in your hiding place where you'd always hide away if you give me all your pennies you can go there -11/13/04

Candy 04:59
CANDY gimme a sip, gimme a sip of something - my throat's all dry gimme me a ship, gimme a ship we'll sail into the easter sky still fawning over candy she's got the look can make a grown man cry i thought she'd understand me but she had canyons carved into her eyes gimme a lift, gimme a lift and leave me up on the higher ground gimme a gift, gimme a gift bring yourself, bring yourself around now candy doesn't love me you wouldn't know by the way she was in the hazy sky above me in the reflections of the two of us gimme the check, gimme the check it's time, it's to get on on gimme a wreck or gimme a break these lines keep going on and on no time to think of candy when the walls are falling all around she can barely make me randy now that she's come unwound -2/28/05

SECOND ANGELINA like a molly in the morning thirty tracks lead out of town such a dirty waste of nothing still it always gets me down though it's not as bad as hopeless just a hair's breadth shy of rage she left her inky fingerprints up and down the page twenty feet below and a million years ago the second angelina said my name twenty feet below and a million years ago the second angelina walked into my heart she tore it all apart and left me nothing quite the same two bits, this loneliness she heard me sing again was it the prowess or was it the summer rain? she relied on hope to carry her back down that beaten road you can carry her desires but you can't outweigh her load twenty feet below and a million years ago the second angelina said my name twenty feet below and a million years ago the second angelina walked into my heart she tore it all apart and left me nothing quite the same i heard the reckoning at the end of the parade she folds her hands and wanders through the maze that she has made if it's not the cause, it's something that she doesn't want to sell until the fight is over and her ghosts are doing well twenty feet below and a million years ago the second angelina said my name twenty feet below and a million years ago the second angelina walked into my heart she tore it all apart and left me nothing quite the same -2/28/05

about

Chris Anderson's 68th full-length album.

This album has been a long time coming. I wrote these songs in late 2004 and early 2005 and they were among the very first to be written in my old studio, The Sidebar. These also came about as I was just starting out as a solo performer, the first "new" songs to get debuted on stage. The idea for this was to take these into a more proper studio and record a big album, with guest musicians and the whole bit. Work began on that project but it soon ground to a halt (one of many reasons why i elect to work alone at all times).

In February 2005, most of these songs, along with about a hundred older songs, were recorded acoustically in a session that was dubbed "Echoes Of The Daisy", for reasons that are long forgotten. For my show on 2/18/05, I extracted all the "new" songs from the session and sequenced them into a little album which was also called "Echoes Of The Daisy", and it proved to be quite a popular little disc. It was just meant to be a placeholder for the eventual album but that album never got made and, instead, for all intents and purposes, the placeholder became the actual album.

Until now. This is the album that it should have been. The first nine songs on Candy originally appeared on "Echoes Of The Daisy", while the last two were ones that were recorded in that session but weren't quite finished enough for release. This was a fun record to make, a nice walk down memory lane, as so many of these recent albums are. This particular period, everything was so fresh, so new, so vibrant. It is a gas to revisit that. I hope you dig this Candy as much as I enjoyed making it.
