All Of My Days
04:06
|
|||
ALL OF MY DAYS
all of my days
are melting into a blue green haze
somewhere they separate
a little left of the maze
twisting, turning
blistered, burning
blended up and spit in the blaze
and all of my lies
are fading into spots in my eyes
sometimes they rescind
and sometimes they wear a disguise
dislodged, unspoken
dodging, broken
driving all the fools to arise
and all of my thoughts
are spilling onto pages once wrought
sometimes they're brilliant
and sometimes we find that they're not
disjointed, vague
not pointing ways
reselling everything that we bought
all of my dreams
are scattered as far as it seems
sometimes they're oceans
and sometimes they're no more than streams

The King
03:42
|
|||
THE KING
everyone loves a quiet night
everyone loves the sunshine
everybody wants to see the light
as long as everybody's feeling alright
everyone loves the moon when it glows
everyone loves the sunshine
everyone loves the wind in their toes
everyone needs it
everyone tip your hat
raise your glass
look around ya
everyone hail the king
why don't ya?
everybody wants to speak their mind
everyone loves the sunshine
everybody wants to turn back time
and look into the eyes of the skyline
everyone's got a good idea
everyone's thinking of something else
everybody wants to bottle up the sun
and leave it in the cupboard on the top shelf
everyone tip your hat
raise your glass
look around ya
everyone hail the king
why don't ya?
everybody's gotta get where they're going
everyone forgets about the sunshine
everybody's got a mind to keep on flowing
and everyone loses it sometimes
everybody's gotta take time to breathe
everyone sleep in the sunshine
everybody wants what everyone needs
everybody's running out of TIME
everyone tip your hat
raise your glass
look around ya
everyone hail the king
why don't ya?

Letter Gone

LETTER GONE
didja see it?
didja see the cone strike?
crashing down and
smashing down
didja see it
levelling the ground?
didja see it?
didja see them smile and wave
when they called your name?
didja see it
when they walked you down the row?
and the hordes all rallied
and hollered about
to let her go
or shoot her down
this letter's gone
this two bit town
is floating down the river now
lying on the bed, underground
didja hear it?
didja hear the news?
recycled blues, loaded guns,
and platform shoes
phony smiles and frigid frowns
didja hear it?
didja hear the sixteen shots
that brought that mother down?
didja hear it
when they dropped her
naked on the ground?
and the preachers all rallied
and called for security
what once was their bane
was now their disease
and that ragged old letter
lay soaked and unread
under the stones
on the riverbed
didja need it?
didja need to hear about it
or was it lost in the shuffle
or washed out in the flood?
didja mean it?
didja mean what you said?
or was it anger, resent, or pain?
or were you just sick of the blood?
and there you were
rallying to yourself
calling for your own
kind of change
and what once was a goal
is now just waste
now that old letter's gone

EVERYONE BREAKS SOMETIMES
who rolled the stone?
who loosed the chain?
who left it rusting in the rain?
who brought you up?
who knocked you down?
who gave you the runaround?
it's all small talk til the stakes are raised
and no one is here to blame you,
shame you, tame you, or defame you
but no one's here to praise you
just to comfort you
everybody feels the weight sometimes
everybody feels your pain
everybody breaks sometimes
that's just the way it is
who told you that you had to cop a smile
each and every day?
who told you that you had to walk for miles
and to think before you convey?
it sounds like a tall order now the stakes are high
and no one is here to take you down,
shake you down, break you down, or wake you
but no one's here to praise you
just to comfort you
everybody feels the weight sometimes
everybody feels your pain
everybody breaks sometimes
that's just the way it is
and sometimes the sky rips open
and sometimes the clouds collide
and sometimes you find you're hoping
for a better place to hide
and sometimes the wind is whipping
and sometimes it's blindly still
and sometimes you feel you're slipping
and sometimes you will
who cracked the cup?
who stole the crown?
who left them hanging in the old town?
who broke the silence?
who shushed the crowd?
just before they dropped the hammer down
it's all small talk til the stakes are raised
and no one is here just to praise you
it's all small talk til the stakes are raised
and no one is here just to praise you
it's all small talk when the stakes are raised
and no one is here just to blame you
no one is here just to blame you,
shame you, tame you, or defame you
no one's gonna take you down
no one's gonna shake you down
no one's gonna break you down
no, they'll never wake you
but no one's here to praise you
just to comfort you
everybody feels the weight sometimes
everybody feels your pain
everybody breaks sometimes
that's just the way it is
everybody breaks sometimes...

Dizzy Spell
02:56
|
|||
DIZZY SPELL
looking out, looking up
he took the book and threw it up
shoo it off, newly tough
and roughly just the same
for twenty days and thirty more
still standing by the open door
back door, cellar door
dancing on the cluttered floor
prancing and romancing
taking chances on the fence
making sense of the densely packed
six-gun rack in a lean-to shack
face the fact, it's getting back
to daylight, stagefright
waiting for another night
to chase those cosmic blues away
away from the river
away from the cold
away from the darkness
away from the old
scenery misfit, half-wit, stupid git
it's just a taste of the waste
they fed us here on tuesday
must be a slow news day
and the dues that we paid
were too short
contort, distort, retort
and the dancer closes her eyes
and turns away from the sky
and the mirrors
and the healers
and the dealers of the lie
into the shelter
the swealtering room
the rickety porch
her heart like a torch
descended on me
just like a candlewax scorch
and the sting of a two karat ring
made her sing like a
fallen angel would sing
and we bring them our rain
and we show them new pain
it's a shame we lost all track of the time
spinspinspinspinspinspinspinspin
spinspinspinspinspinspinspinspin
spinspinspinspinspinspinspinspin
spinspinspinspinspinspinspinspin
hit the ground.

Kill It To Live
06:10
|
|||
KILL IT TO LIVE
we used to sit out on the ledge
never slipping off the edge
just lying there like birds unwinged
waiting for the wind
waiting for the wind to sing
behind the wood and stained-glass wall
they kept him breathing til the fall
still trying and denying him
he never made an open choice
waiting for the wind
waiting for another voice
we never really thought they'd have
to buy the world to give
we never really thought they'd have
to kill it to just to live
your thoughts, like open hearts
are caught like diamonds in a sieve
we never really thought we'd have
to kill it just to live
ten-cent, fingerprint
newsprint whore
wail on the rail
like a banshee at the door
the lions do their penance
while lying naked on the floor
sleeping, swerving, down the road
the steepest mountains soon erode
and point towards the answers that
he had scribbled underneath his hat
waiting for the wind
to knock him down and leave him flat
we never really thought they'd have
to buy the world to give
we never really thought they'd have
to kill it to just to live
your thoughts, like open hearts
are caught like diamonds in a sieve
we never really thought wey'd have
to kill it just to live
harnessing rebellion
choose another fear
tarnished like Trevelyan
with dirt between his ears
dream of a new morning
or an old one to relive
dream of frigid warnings
to kill it just to live
no sleep, no peace
no love, no breath
no inbetween
waiting for the wind to sing
ten-cent, fingerprint
newsprint whore
wail on the rail
like a banshee at the door
waiting for the wind
to slap your face
and close the door
we never really thought we'd have
to kill it to just to live

Wax Lips And Juice

WAX LIPS AND JUICE
and when the dust has cleared away
and all the clouds are back in place
i'll take you down to this one horse town
we'll raise another then we'll burn it down
and sit and watch the embers fade
then raise it up again
it's okay, it's alright
we can close our eyes tonight
and if the sun is left alone
with all the dirt you've ever known
we'll raise our glass and toast to everything
and watch in reverence as they dance and sing
we'll write it down and memorize their lines
and play them back again
it's okay, it's alright
we can close our eyes tonight
and if your memories start to fade
we'll carve in stone the words you said
and hand them down for all to know in time
and stitch together what was yours and mine
we'll drink another to forget the way
they broke you down again
it's okay, it's alright
we can close our eyes tonight

Marabelle
03:36
|
|||
MARABELLE
marabelle stood up in the afternoon
shook the dust from out of her hair
and spun around in circles
in the crowded corner room
and everyone could see that she was there
she never stopped to think
about the time she turned away
or the time she made a point
to show the whole wide world
what she became
marabelle kept a rattlesnake
in a basket by the door
she would take it out from time to time
and shake it in the face
of anyone who came around
like the ones to tried to show her all the signs
that would lead her to some ill-advised
advancement of here age
she would look around and die
just from the sight of what she became
marabelle took a moment out to think about the time
before turning her sights to something else
no preacher, pawn, or exorcist
could make her see another way
not that they would even want to try
coz marabelle just had that thing
that made them all behave
it was something like a hurricane
that came crashing down in waves
of what she became
marabelle just took a breath
and started dancing on the floor
she spoke in tongues and broken rhymes
she rolled and flailed and spun around
but there was no one there to see
just how sweet marabelle came to be
what she became

Idle
03:05
|
|||
IDLE
around the corner from the obvious
down the road from the oblivious
across the screet from the progress
that your patience may someday bring
over the river from comfort and trust
over the border from some kind of lust
above all the avenues of patience and disgust
progress waits in the wings
progress needs patience
to keep it alive
patience brings waiting
and a will to survive
waiting brings little
but the want to arrive
from the idle hands
waiting on the other side
under the radar and into the streets
under the covers and into the sheets
falling once over for the ones who persist
and the ones who insist, well...
you know they never help
into the sum of the substance of this
under the thumbs of the ones we missed
and the ones that we kissed now grow like a cyst
on the face of the patience that we once held
progress needs patience
to keep it alive
patience brings waiting
and a will to survive
waiting brings little
but the want to arrive
from the idle hands
waiting on the other side

Twisting Once Again
04:16
|
|||
TWISTING ONCE AGAIN
flower cold
drifting desert bloom
shattered sun
splintered castover gloom
tipping scales
persistant black rain
blankets collide
til they're twisting once again
dancers crush
clustered and tight
stained glass eye
refracting all the light
turnstile trip
crushing coal train
standing in the doorway
til they're twisting once again

THE OTHER SIDE OF ATLANTA
moving just like clockwork
stealing under the gun
looking out the tattered screen
pretending she's the one
waiting for a simple time
to stash our dreams away
fading like the morning stars
fade away
and it's fifteen miles to the other side of atlanta
that's where my baby's crawling up the vine
and it's fifteen miles to the other side of atlanta
we're gonna take some time
we're gonna take all night
driving through the red lights
sleepin' at the wheel
for half the day and all the night
i could hardly feel
her skin was wrapped around my soul
like the cover of a book
she's got a due date chiseled on her back
no time to look away
and it's fifteen miles to the other side of atlanta
that's where my baby's crawling up the vine
and it's fifteen miles to the other side of atlanta
we're gonna take some time
we're gonna take all night
looking over my shoulder
there's nothing left to see
except the dust of other days gone by
and they're all lost on me
we pull into the parking lot
get out and walk around
she said "if it is, then i guess it's not"
and promptly hit the ground
and it's fifteen miles to the other side of atlanta
that's where my baby's crawling up the vine
and it's fifteen miles to the other side of atlanta
we're gonna take some time
we're gonna take all night

Eventually
05:39
|
|||
EVENTUALLY
everything you say
and everything you do
will someday make it back to you
just wait and see
everything you say
and everything you do
everything you wish for
will come true eventually
all that you dream of
and all you've waited for
all that you've seen
in your delusions of grandeur
all that you speak of
and all that you feel
all that's oblique
will someday be real
everything you say
and everything you do
will someday make it back to you
just wait and see
everything you say
and everything you do
everything you wish for
will come true eventually
all that you sing of
in all of your songs
all that you bring up
from the right to the wrongs
all that you capture
and all that you crave
all of your rapture
will build saints out of knaves
everything you say
and everything you do
will someday make it back to you
just wait and see
everything you say
and everything you do
everything you wish for
will come true eventually
all that you've wanted
and all that you don't
all that you've flaunted
and all that you won't
all that you boast
to a tolerable degree
will haunt you like ghosts
eventually
everything you say
and everything you do
will someday make it back to you
just wait and see
everything you say
and everything you do
everything you wish for
will come true eventually

Sleepin' At The Wheel
03:35
|
|||
SLEEPIN' AT THE WHEEL
do you ever notice moments when
you're halfway there and back again
and circles jerk you up and down
your eyelids drop and hit the ground
you hardly notice or escape
your knuckles white, your mouth agape
you think about the way it turns
a moment into something else, no doubt
you take some time to wander out
just wake me up, sweet lucille
i'm sleepin' at the wheel again
just wake me up or shake me up
before i hit that dream again
just wake me up, sweet lucille
i'm sleepin' at the wheel again
just wake me up or shake me up
before i crack it up again
do you ever see the guarantee
there's nothing there in front of me
the clouds have kept your eyes at bay
there's nothing stronger than the way
it holds you close and takes control
and wraps it's arms around your soul
and builds a tunnel deep inside
to find a stanger place to hide, no doubt
you take some time to wander out
just wake me up, sweet lucille
i'm sleepin' at the wheel again
just wake me up or shake me up
before i hit that dream again
just wake me up, sweet lucille
i'm sleepin' at the wheel again
just wake me up or shake me up
before i crack it up again
