KING OF CLOWNS paper, lace, and shiny mirrors on the walls of the cave cigarettes and falling teardrops on the cheeks of the brave put it there, it's like the old days me and i, we're still around mountain airs, we're spinning sideways got my ear to the ground they crowned me the king of clowns and then they drove me out of town tiny men and shallow songbirds is it wise or a lie epiphanies in minor thirds revelations on the fly peace of mind, it's overrated says the captain of this crash vanity's an overstatement lest they give us the cash they crowned me the king of clowns and then they drove me out of town it was here that they rescued a stolen moment of this life it was there, they went right by you and they sharpened all their knives sidewind, sight unsung is it the wind or a screen or the ghosts in the dungeon and the angels who sing they crowned me the king of clowns and then they drove me out of town this is not for the lyin' this is not for the rain well, it's not like you were cryin' you just slipped down the drain two step, alley over to the forks in the road they are not there just to taunt you or to carry your load they crowned me the king of clowns and then they drove me out of town in the dirt, and on the skyline in the wind and the rain on the beach, we've wasted ll our time break the rules and bring the pain well, they took me out to shoot me but they couldn't see my face battlescars, they may elude me or at least they know their place me and i, we're like the sun and me and i, we're like the night me and i, we dance, we run til me and i are out of sight they crowned me the king of clowns and then they drove me out of town -3/22/07

Blue Eyes 03:56
BLUE EYES everyday i wake up to your blue eyes everyday i think i've seen it all everyday i think about the way you cried when i left you in the dark, holding the ball answers come and questions fly right out the window every time their purpose comes alive we sit and talk about the way they go over and around these common lines every day i think about your blue eyes every day i walk beside my shadow but i never do the things he says just like that time, well it doesn't matter now cause it wasn't me and it's over now, i guess the days go by and still we stumble out the back door every time these notions make themselves arrive we run and hide and wait for them to go rolling down those rapid rivers of our lives every day i think about your blue eyes -3/22/07

LOST ALONG THE WAY moonlight - the angles are right tonight black gold in the slick of the face of her fright she's like a mean light she got the glare of the mood and the sway she's a haughty one if we only knew what to say but we got lost along the way no bread - the sister led us away she said it was the will of the only way she's like an island she's alone in an open bay she keep her eyes out for the coast and the wings and the waves but she got lost along the way it's alive in the rivers rushing how is it that we can push and pull and row in the face of the place and knowing as it's now - we're getting older screen every scene in reverse, show it two times defend every lie with a lie we threw it on the pile so everyone can smile hello, we've got a new idea we're never gonna get too old we're never gonna lose control how does that feel? good god, he's alive in the heart of the beast old sod, he's asleep at the head of the feast he's got to take out or reawaken the rules of the day he keeps his eyes closed and he dreams of an angel at play who got lost along the way -12/24/06

HANGUP IN THE GARDEN there's a hangup in the garden there's a heckler on the hill there's a new moon it's a-comin' with a thousand dollar bill there's a rooster in the henhouse with a presidential pardon for the fires that he's startin' there's a hangup in the garden there's a recreation center in backyard by the lake there's a girl who's a pretender being always on the take there's a siren and it's soundin' and the rain begins to harden for all the passengers departin' there's a hangup in the garden it looks like the last known hypocrite has met his match and he bows in reverence tending to the oil and the ash and he thinks that he can fake it takin' time to wage his catch while his alter ego fills his shoes with the stolen pony stash thatt's what it is there's a gypsy woman holding some things she wants to sell there's a river and it's folding as far as i can tell there's a caribbean mistress and she's putting all her heart in to places yet uncharted there's a hangup in the garden -4/19/07 (with tim parks)

BLOOD AND ROSES tonight let's take a drive out and look around it's something hidden underneath the leaves on the autumn ground time and time again haunted winds will bring us in we are down, we suppose for the blood and roses in this, we last too long come forty-three, we still can see for what we bring along is disaster in the form of pleas break your silence, break the line that keeps you feelin' fine we are down, we suppose for the blood and roses rise above all the blood and roses stage your grace on the field of nothing bigger than us all we lie awake and think about the space beyond our darkest wall underneath our nose rae the blood and roses just off the cuff we feel it burn from our head down to our toes we're looking up we feel the yearn in the blood and roses -1/26/07 & 1/25/16

TWO MONKEYS IN THE SHADE take a walk with me scene: the sunshine weeds and autumn leaves your hand in mine and intertwined like chutes of wheat in sheaves through the howling, growling scowling clouds that we all see free your mind and time will cut the lines of what they call being free believing here for the first time making our minds up pointing at the life parade sing a song with me any song, that'll do i wanna hear you sing so what, i've heard you sing the same song every time it's never lost its ring or gotten old like the crap songs cluttering the radio waves it's like a jubilee every time you smile i'd walk a million miles to hear you sing again to me standing here for the first time grinning at the crowd you know, we got it made believing here for the first time making our minds up two-stepping in the life parade we're on to something good do a dance with me any kind of dance i just want to feel you're near every moment that i can't feel your heartbeat is like a million years if the stars explode or the hills erode you know, i'll always keep my place in the hands of you only in your hands, i am only just inches from your face holding still for the first time looking at the light we got it like two monkeys in the shade believing here for the first time making up our minds.... -9/15/06

BLOW THAT MOTHER DOWN you can take the water and the wine and sail away to anywhere the sun, it shines you and everyone could bridge together if you're gonna sell yourself don't sell yourself too shy i ain't got no time for resolution you're stuck in circles when your memory's on the prowl this quiet earth, this revolution will never get the best of us or turn us back around if we blow that mother down and only if it is decided if you're gonna walk you're gonna walk this crooked line you play the martyr very well, babe but it'll only make them stop and stare and sulk and whine i ain't got no time for resolution you're stuck in circles when your memory's on the prowl this quiet earth, this revolution will never get the best of us or turn us back around if we blow that mother down and when it burns, you're gonna burn and when it breaks you're gonna feel it all the same and when they cry to you for mercy don't surrender anything except your shame i ain't got no time for resolution you're stuck in circles when your memory's on the prowl this quiet earth, this revolution will never get the best of us or turn us back around if we blow that mother down -11/16/06

about

Chris Anderson's 71st full-length album.

When I started out this anniversary back-catalog reclamation project, all of these albums were planned out in advance, and recorded in order. This album is one of the ones I was most excited to record and was thrilled when its time came. The songs that make up this album were mostly written in 2006-2007. Some of them were originally intended for an album called Peel that got shelved, while others were written as strays, random songs that came to me outside of a specific project and set aside for a rainy day. One of these songs was a rare writing collaboration (with Tim Parks) while another was written for, and performed at, my wedding. These songs tell a story of a specific, cherished time in my life, but is a story that, until now, has only been known by me. None of these songs have ever appeared on an FDM release before and most are being heard for the first time here. I am so immensely proud of this record and to have it come out on my 45th birthday is a special thrill. I hope you like it.
