GET UP, GET HIGH the streets run to nowhere and the avenues are dead i need to get to somewhere but i'm lost inside my head sorting out the spaces and taking too much time i need to find my face or a little piece of mind get up and get high you better get up, get up get up and get high just what the hell is going on? this can't be what i feel standing in the doorway hazy memories to steal these frozen moments scatter on the floor with the remains of all the ones who came before and all the ones who left in vain get up and get high you better get up, get up get up and get high roasting all the masses and toasting all the nugs you can run but you can't hide from the influential thug he'll rob you of your wits and steal away your shame just don't look to me for answers they're the only ones to blame get up and get high you better get up, get up get up and get high -3/17/06 (with sean lichtenberger)

STANDING ON THE FACE spontaneous combustion just aint what it used to be i'm scratching my head like a dog who's for the fleas wondering just what to do until the sun goes down i'll get up on the face of everyone who's still 'round and it's one for the trouble and two for the score three for the bayonetts, they're breaking down my door none for the rest of you expecting so much more we'll just sit and hit it like we've always done before standing on the face of every clock, who's got the time? rearrange your conscience on the sofa for a dime i'd tell you what its like to have an open piece of mind if you only stop your wallowing and get up from behind this is the last time that i'll take this broken wing maybe the next go-round, we'll all sit back and sing while all the boxers take their place around the ring to stir around the echoes and the ghosts of everything -3/16/06 (with sean lichtenberger)

about

In March 2006, as I was in the process of recording Static Blue, my (now) brother-in-law Sean came over to my place with a line in his head - "spontaneous combustion just ain't what it used to be" - and said we had to make it into a song. So we spent the evening turning that line into two songs, actually ("Standing On The Face" and "Dented" have the exact same lyric with very different music), as well as writing another. The next evening we attempted to capture the magic once more and, while the result was not as impressive as the first night, it still yielded two more songs.

For some reason, that's where the collaboration ended. The tracks from the first night were recorded and released on the BG label under the name, The (Arthur) Dents (we are both big fans of the Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy). In 2018, in the midst of some mad recording projects, all of those songs were unearthed and given proper recording treatment. This was also released on the BG label under the title, Re...dented! and given to Sean as a Christmas gift.

In the years since, these tracks were the only fully produced tracks that never made the jump to the FDM label but that changes now with this re-release. Reverting back to its original title, and dropping the fake "band" name, this is a solid little EP and I am more than thrilled to finally bring it home.

The cover photo was found within a gigantic trove of photos that I got from my grandmother's house. No one in the family has any idea who this person is; most likely it's one of my grandparents' drunk friends. Whatever the story behind this photo is, it is most certainly dented.

Just like the dudes who wrote these songs. Dig 'em.
