MONSTERS UNDER THE BED in the movement of the axis through the corners of our minds it's not just what attacks us it's also who they leave behind the demons and the beggars politicians and the thieves they might restrict our armor but they never want to leave in the movement of the sparrow over fields of marigold their minds, they may be narrow but they believe what they are told from the pundits to the preachers and the brittle talking heads they look to them as teachers but they're just monsters under the bed in the movement of the morning as the dawn escapes the night thirty legions, they are storming but they cannot put up a fight for the limit of their crush is like a passage to the void where the amateurs all push and they all struggle to avoid the monsters under the bed do they get inside of your head? do they wait until they're fed? or do they just leave it instead? do they commune out with the dead? or do they wade through all the dread? did they hear you when you said there's monsters underneath the bed? -3/29/08

CLALLAM COUNTY SHERIFF'S CHAIN GANG a hundred thousand miles from the freakshow, singing in the rain vanessa takes a drag and burns a hole in the middle of the frame and i don't know how you can sing that song under your load when the clallam county sheriff's got his chain gang workin' on the road between the tooth and nail you'll find a wise man wandering about he's got his boots in a bundle coz, no matter what, he can't figure it out the way the wind blows is like a million drops of ironic code when the clallam county sherif's got his chain gang workin' on the road if you listen to the rustle of the moth in the belly of the wood you can hear a tiny song beneath the strands of his polyester hood and when the sun sets and another night gets set up to explode when the clallam county sheriff's got his chain gang workin' on the road -6/25/08
15.
IMAGINARY JANE imaginary jane in the rain she's gonna do it all again she won't complain she is always entertained she won't explain she drove a nail into the chain what a shame, what a shame imaginary jane in the rain she's gonna do it all again it's in her brain it's like she's slipping down the drain but she don't complain she's hanging from the backwards train what a shame, what a shame imaginary jane in the rain she's gonna do it all again she's switching lanes and she does it all in vain she can't explain reveal her gain or ascertain what a shame, what a shame imaginary jane in the rain she's gonna do it all again -3/17/08

A SHAKY MEANS TO A SHAKY END breathe, like the likeness of the color of light on the brink of collapse on a chamomile night these trinkets are like those old drama girls when they would shake and break and laugh themselves awake when the morning breaks even and the night slips away we feel the deep love between the vague lightness of day and the roses we left in the bastard's arcade is there a means to an end to the messes we've made? every last hour is another trip around the bend we're standing on the brink of a shaky means to a shaky end fearless, like a lion at the top of the pride he doesn't need to wander and he doesn't need to hide as the crickets sing their tune that spins and swirls in the pool he shakes his paw and swats them off like an imitation jewel every last hour is another trip around the bend we're standing on the brink of a shaky means to a shaky end jaded, like a leader who's led from blood to blood his ego may need feeding but it's buried in the mud these times are like true dynamos understated in the wind when no one stops to listen or pretend to be your friend every last hour is another trip around the bend we're standing on the brink of a shaky means to a shaky end -2/13/08

Mega Jam 08:14

about

In 2017, in conjunction with my "anniversary" series of album releases, I teamed up with my old pal Rust Rudolph, and his Flyingdeer Records label, and began releasing a series of singles. One track from each album was selected, with cover art that aesthetically fit with its parent album and tons of exclusive b-side tracks, and released worldwide on pretty much every platform imaginable. To date, 25 singles have been released, each one featuring anywhere from 1-8 additional tracks.

The fun thing about b-sides is that all the rules go out the window. You can really put anything on the back of a single and it is acceptable. The only rule I followed here is that the b-side songs had to have been written at the same time as the songs on its corresponding album. Sometimes the songs I chose were ones that didn't come to mind when I was recording the album. Sometimes they were ones that just didn't fit the sequence of the album. Sometimes they were ones that I felt were too good to get buried on an album when they could get a wider release on a single.

This set collects some of the more esoteric b-sides - the weird songs, the spaced-out songs, the jams, etc. A few of the songs on this set are seeing release here for the very first time, outtakes from earlier projects and experiments that continue to confound me. A few of these songs are favorites of mine, a couple of them are almost "classics", and every one of them calls to mind the moments they were first conceived, each one a distinct memory and chapter in my own story. And I am proud of every one - even the weird shit.
