REINVENT THE LIE just like the dove we're hanging on to love to watch it grow and flutter through the snow into a soapy stain when the idols take the reins and blow by blow they cover up the blood and go to see the future on the inside of their minds wasting time scraping off the residue of bygone crimes and the mystery of the rain won't wash away these sunken eyes take a moment out to reinvent the lie just like the sun we're barely holding on to seek the twilight in the darkest hour of night to feel the dirty wheel pressed against this heart of steel sometimes the only way to know is just to go capping off the years when solace wiped away the tears and dried the rain when the only steps led down the spiral drain waiting for the morning when we'd do it all again with variations celebrate the sky and reinvent the lie just like the fog we react like rabid dogs poison flesh to flesh it's only just a test to be the wader now to release the inner growl on the first that makes a break or hesitates to reenact the moment when we fell flat on our face in front of grace she had no hold on us, she's really kind of cold and sometimes she comes screaming down the wire just in time to rearrange the fire and reinvent the lie -7/18/06

ELEVEN STORIES take your talk outside it don't mean nothing to you now if you leave it all behind or if you leave it on the windowsill there's something to be said or if there's nothing to relay they've got you rolling down the hill to yesterday scenery and half-wits waiting welcome mat parade harvesting their tears and all the progress that they made if you're tangled out of reason if you're strangling inside the road is nothing stronger than your pride eleven stories now we're down by five and we're looking at the ones who are still alive where's the silence where's the voice of need it's locked up in the cupboard with the pits and peas eleven stories and that's all be the open air while there's still time to steal away before the dance is done before the fireworks display you can call for a new order you can call it everything if you only see it through enough to sing eleven stories or a song of need we're strangling the ones who bring us up to speed and if we take a piece of the prize we'll hear about it later when we're all despised tell me, is it magic? tell me, is it greed? tell me, is it anything you'd ever need? tell me, is it working? tell me, is it tied? tell me, is it lies, lies, lies? eleven stories and that's all -7/18/06

THOUGHT PARADE hello! don't stumble out that door hello! don't talk to monsters anymore we gotta hide our eyes when it's raining through disguise and the torture victim's laid in the pent-up thought parade hello! don't pass the cherry anymore hello! don't act so cheerful anymore you gotta take that ride and spit it out sometimes when the torture victim cries as the thought parade goes by hello! don't be a stranger anymore hello! watch out for splinters in the floor we gotta flee that scene of broken glass and gasoline when the torture victim's healed and the thought parade goes squealing on by... -7/17/06

THE POST well...what do you know? it seems you're tied to the whipping post it seems you lied and you're getting yours don't you know? like a moose in his tracks like a deer in the headlights like a hand in the cookie jar they got you red like a fish on the wrong line like a bear in a trap like a concealed cold-caller they got you red like a pheasant in flight like a roach in the night like a robber in a catfight they got you red well...what do you know? it seems you're tied to the whipping post it seems you lied and you're getting yours don't you know? -7/18/06

about

Not to be confused with the album called Reinvent The Lie, which features the song of the same name, this is an EP celebrating a new version of "Reinvent The Lie" which was recorded for the 2020 updated version of the album, The Gravity Tree. Originally written in July 2006, "Reinvent The Lie" has gone on, to this very day, to be my all-time favorite original song and the one song that I would like to be remembered by, if it came down to only one song.

While this song had already been recorded in the modern era, for the album that bears its name, that version did not sit well with the other new recordings so it was tracked again from scratch. Not only did it bring the recording up to the standard of the album but it allowed me to add in a few flourishes that had developed over the years. The session was one of the most enjoyable I've ever had.

Beyond the title track, this EP is fleshed out with new recordings of other songs that originally came into being during the writing stages of The Gravity Tree but were not recorded for the album, for one reason or another. These sessions, which came in the midst of one of the most explosive bouts of recording FDM had ever seen, were so much fun.
