All Rise Up 03:53
ALL RISE UP i took the call you were in your car and you drove for miles and miles and miles and you sang when the phone rang it seems you talked for hours and hours and hours on end let's all rise up let's all rise up to death-defying mystifying highs you were in your house just like a mouse when you stole the cheese from me oh, i let him know you took it up and you threw up and you looked it up to find that it's a fate let's all rise up let's all rise up to death-defying mystifying highs i heard you sing that old tune when you took the covers and stumbled out the door you made some noise with your toys then you took them out and smashed them in the road let's all rise up let's all rise up to death-defying mystifying highs -10/31/07

MAGIC MOMENTS we all believe in magic moments well, they come to me from time to time from the moment they come rolling break of day, no impressing me, it's a no we all believe in magic moments they're like dust what blows away can carry us too far if it's cold, let us just waste a minute talking to the blood if it's warm, beware the flies it's all mucked up don't you walk and don't you worry my dear, my caroline don't you walk and don't you worry now we all believe in introductions they strain us day by day we close our eyes and wish that they would go away knowing me, knowing me, i'd sing a panic song knowing me, knowing me i'd run... -11/6/07

Sally Go Bye 04:09
SALLY GO BYE sally go bye take a look around take a look around it's in your eyes when you run around when you run around i can crawl under the warning bells to see them in their winner's cloak through the haze and smoke and i can wash my feet and light out, screaming for another try but all i say is something like sally go bye take a look around take a look around it's in your eyes when you run around when you run around when they took the keys and left you underneath the open skylight, singing it was a good night then when we laughed and called it off we thought it nothing but a good time then and so i gotta say now sally go bye take a look around take a look around it's in your eyes when you run around when you run around i can't save another penny for you and i can't waste another hour on you and i've been waiting and i've been waiting all my life to say sally go bye take a look around take a look around it's in your eyes when you run around when you run around and we can rake it through the coals we're breaking down on the cathedral steps and the stones they throw there are nothing like the ones that we saw back then it was something from a deep recess imagination crawling out and screaming out it's time to look her in the eye, and say sally go bye take a look around take a look around it's in your eyes when you run around when you run around -11/5/07

White Plain 03:00
WHITE PLAIN looking at the white plain ghost on the edge of the mound, there she's tied and she's bound and driving around the white plain edges of a heaven it's a cool breeze blowing through my knees don't cry just wait for the crush to get by to get by you've gotta turn around and look to the days when they took you for you've gotta turn around like a has-been staring at the mirror on the dirty old ground like a wash-up waiting for the chance to come around you're looking green is it forever in your eyes you seem so startled and surprised the whites of your eyes are folding down into the white plain -10/29/07

The It 03:49

Hammer Down 04:20
HAMMER DOWN teardrops drip to the oasis hidden from the desert of my soul this arid landscape consumes me and i crawl back into my sand hole as i am looking out the top people circle all around me holding guns and waving flags yeah, they all surround me keep it locked inside a box thirty lashes if you forget it keep your shoes and mind your socks if you don't, someday you're gonna get it hang around, hammer down do you remember long ago when we said something that we didn't really know we found excuses and relied on old charades we laughed at ourselves through our masquerades and all those phases in the rain they've seen my face around but they don't even know my name it's kinda quiet on the floor sometimes we're burning but we don't know what for and the numbers, they add up are they all good? no comment they never say a word and all these tables still employ a little piece of string at the end of this toy eat the truth and mind the lie remember when i said it was a lie well, you know that i was lyin' then hammer down... -10/30/07

Cornelia 04:31
CORNELIA in the garden she's writing on the wall say hello to the wonders of them all in the garden she's writing on the wall good bye and i go, and i go back home in the hall you see the garden up ahead some light you wander out and shake your head in the hall i see you turn and walk away bye bye in the wind she is hanging on a limb she takes it in and still she does it all again out in the wind she can see the mother of all light no lie and i go, and i go back home in the air she cries and begs for mother's milk and she sings a song of freedom of her will in the air the flips and dances in the wind oh my and i go, and i go back home -11/2/07

The Void 06:59
THE VOID i read the book the other day i heard it was all she had to say she wore a white gown when she danced with the gods in her basement, by the canal she wore a red dress on her wedding day she's walking out to say goodbye to the summer she says goodbye to all the winter dogs she says goodbye to the summer she let her hair down she's taken a house or a country estate at her table, she writhes and she sang about how the blues has gone away and someday, you'll see her fading someday, she'll be waiting for a one way ticket to the void she said goodbye to the summer she said goodbye to all the winter dogs she said goodbye to the summer gravel kicking under her brow she rides with the circus and the clowns it's a good crush sometimes, if you need it sometimes you don't she said goodbye to the summer she said goodbye to all the winter dogs she said goodbye to the summer -10/27/07

Your Room 03:20
YOUR ROOM in her room she stares at the clock as it's winding down in her room she sees a widow's shadow it's fading now it's a long way up and it's a long way down you can have me if i'm still around i'll be waiting on the fringes of your room in her room she sees the light through the cracks in the blinds sometimes she paints it black to get the voices out they say i've been waiting i'm still waiting i feel great let's get it on and i can't wait and i can't fake it you know it's not me anyhow and i can't fall for you in your room in her room she burns the carpet and watches the telly in the back of her mind in her room she feels the void it's like a stain and she can't take it and i can't fake and i can't wait it's nothing i'd want anyway and i can't try it's a cold hard lie to believe it's just a wandering eye to touch, to feel too much, too real this painting's gotta be revealed to see what's up we must come down and take a look around in your room -11/6/07

about

Chris Anderson's 74th full-length album release.

2007 was an intensely prolific year for me. By far the most productive year I ever had, and probably ever will have. At least as far as songwriting is concerned. There were several distinct writing projects that happened that year and I will be mining material from that year for the rest of my life.

One such project occurred in October of that year. I was working at Olsson's Books & Records and one of my colleagues brought in a trashy nylon string guitar that only had four strings and he left it in the back room for us to mess around with. So I would tinker with it during my lunch breaks. At the time I always had a digital voice recorder handy, in case an idea would come to me. While having lunch one day, I started coming up with an idea and when I went to record it, it came out as a fully-formed song. Slightly obtuse, but it was still a coherent song. Excited about the possibilities, I decided to make it a thing and I spent my lunch breaks, over the course of a couple of weeks, improvising songs to the handheld. There were two strict rules that had to be followed:

1) The improvisations had to resemble actual, fully-formed songs. There had to be focus on the lyrics and there had to be enough variation in the musical themes to make it sound legit.

2) There could be no revision whatsoever.

Sadly, those original recordings were lost in a hard-drive crash but not before I took the best of the songs and recorded them on a 4-track cassette recorder. 26 songs were recorded. Half of those were sequenced and released as the album, The Age Of Coming Down. The remaining thirteen songs were slated to comprise an album called Sidestepping Through Babylon. One copy of that exists in my vault but the album never got released.

In 2018, I was deep into this project that saw me revisit older material and re-record them into the albums that they could/should have been. These songs were some that I was very much looking forward to recording and I had a blast updating this batch of songs.

Some of the songs on this album originally appeared on The Age Of Coming Down, while many did not. I finally got to use that abandoned album title and the end result is one very cool album. There was a certain haunting charm to the original recordings that I love....obtuse songs sizzling under a ghostly wash of tape hiss. But that's the beauty of records - they last forever.

This new album takes those ideas and perfects them. Some of these songs were tricky, some came off without a hitch, and all of them were fun. That the best part about music.
