Ghost Town 03:21
GHOST TOWN one fifteen in the afternoon and there's nothing going down it looks just like a ghost town some swing in but no one stays not for an hour or a span of days tumbleweeds blow though the air is still it's as quiet as the cross on the top of the hill no familiar faces, no pleasantries no rat, no race, not even a breeze nothing's really easy in this dust bowl town kick up the dirt and stir it around there used to be a fountain in the middle of town rising like a mountain in a dressing gown but now it's dry like my windswept eyes like the cracks in the face of the narrow clown there used to be a saloon that was never ever closed they would drink in the light of the new moon blood slashing the wrists of their woes now there's just dust and the din of decay as dim as the rust and the dirt and the clay as restless as flowers on the side of the mound they're ambling away from the old ghost town -4/21/05

about

This EP was conceived, mixed, edited, sequenced, sleeved, and released between midnight and 3am on 12/31/23.

This year kicked off with the release of three EPs on 1/12/23 (3:44pm), and with this (otherwise shitbag of a) year ending on another clever date, I could not help myself. The tracks on this EP were recorded in the fall of 2020, along with about 120 others (those recordings fed countless releases since, and still a great many to come), and were all written at very different times. Newly mixed, just now, this short set serves as a cool cross-section of some of the lesser-known sides of the vast FDM songbook.

"Ghost Town" was originally written, as a lyric, while working the record desk at Olsson's on a particularly slow afternoon. Set to music the following year, this was first recorded during the big Static Blue project (ultimately released on the Illumination album). This version was originally intended for the next album to be squeezed from its particular songwriting era (and it may still...stay tuned?) but it sits well, kicking off this little shindig.

"Betty In A Birthday Suit" started out as a joke back in 2002, during sessions for an album called What It Is. The original lyric was pretty terrible, and the delivery wasn't much better, and I ranked this as the Worst FDM Song Ever....until 2020, when I dusted it off and rewrote the lyric, for this recording. It's still a goofy song but I can dig it now.

"Doctor Rita" first came about when I was living in Blacksburg, in spring 1998. For some reason this song never quite came together. I had the groove, and I had some lyrics, but nothing close to a real song. This version remedies that while also going a bit out there.

"Johnny Shitfuck" was born out of traffic frustration, back in late 2009. Sometimes I shout while driving, sometimes I cuss up a storm, and sometimes I make up extremely vulgar songs about all the other drivers around me, and what I'd might like to do to them, if given the chance. This is one of the tamer ones, in fact (and the only one to ever be documented, thankfully). As a full-on song, this one took a long time to get together, but I really love the end result. Sure, it will never get played on the radio, but would it have otherwise?

What a fitting way to end the final release of this year, ya? 2023 was a extremely difficult year for pretty much everyone I know (and everyone they know as well). Nowhere to go but up, from here, so here's to a much brighter 2024!

Enjoy this little parting gift...
