GHOST TOWN

one fifteen in the afternoon
and there's nothing going down
it looks just like a ghost town

some swing in but no one stays
not for an hour or a span of days
tumbleweeds blow though the air is still
it's as quiet as the cross on the top of the hill

no familiar faces, no pleasantries
no rat, no race, not even a breeze
nothing's really easy in this dust bowl town
kick up the dirt and stir it around

there used to be a fountain
in the middle of town
rising like a mountain
in a dressing gown
but now it's dry
like my windswept eyes
like the cracks in the
face of the narrow clown

there used to be a saloon
that was never ever closed
they would drink in the light
of the new moon blood
slashing the wrists of their woes
now there's just dust
and the din of decay
as dim as the rust
and the dirt and the clay
as restless as flowers
on the side of the mound
they're ambling away
from the old ghost town
