about

"Sanctuary Man", which is clearly a song of the times in which it was written, was one that came to me out of the blue while at work one day. The chorus appeared to me and I had to record a short a cappella snippet to my phone, so I would remember it. Upon returning home, the entire song fell together in about ten minutes. I immediately filmed a video of me performing the song (i think that was the first full pass i ever made on the song) and posted it to Facebook, where it garnered some of the most positive bits of feedback I've ever experienced.

Soon after, I recorded this, along with a few other tunes. The initial idea was to use these tracks to bolster the then-impending Chasing Twilight album, but then it was discovered that they weren't necessary and were instead set aside for a future album. Other songs soon came into being and it was apparent that there was a new album on the horizon. Before I could get to that album, however, another one came into being. And then another. And then the RPM Challenge came upon me and I decided to create something new for that project (which ended up being The Shadow Walker and The Shadow Infinite).

However, prior to that, I assembled a compilation of tracks from the previous decade, which was released at 12:01am on 1/1/20. Taking one song from every year, "Sanctuary Man" was the offering for 2020, the one "new song" on the set.

When the pandemic hit and everyone was quarantined, my musical sights shifted towards the Social Distance Tour and all recording plans were put on hold. Other projects came into being as well and it was the end of September before the 8-track was fired up once again. In two weekends, I got all the tracking done for two albums - Mad Honey and Spaces Erases. This EP is the first taste of those albums.

Remixed and taken from Mad Honey, "Sanctuary Man" is about being fed up with the news, about being fed up with the state of this world, and is about feeling morally and spiritually superior to most of the people in the world, both real and virtual. It's about doing your own thing, minding your own business, focusing inward to be the best YOU possible, and not getting hung up on all the bickering that goes on.

"Emily's Shoulder" was written with the express intention of being a b-side, and it was a fun one to record. The shoulder in question belongs to Emily Haines. This is the only track on this EP that was recorded during the Fall 2020 deluge.

"Waiting For The Apocalypse" was written early on during the January 2019 project that resulted in the Shaker The Moon / Something Akin To A Healer / Chasing Twilight album trilogy. This was originally titled "Gravy For The Apocalypse" which was a title that had sat for years on a potential-song list.

"Shackalack" is a little ditty that, at one point, was the title track of the album that became Chasing Twilight. Shackalack is that magical place, where there are no hangups, no bullshit, none of that current event, social media, talking head type of drama that seems to have taken over the world. It is a peaceful place. A perfect place. Zen.

Mad Honey is coming. Until then.....this.
