IF I TOLD YOU I LOVED YOU if i told you i loved you i'd be direct and true but that just ain't me babe and you know it too it ain't vague, it ain't oblique it ain't shrouded, inarticulate goo so i won't tell you i love you even though i really do if i told you i loved you it would never be a lie and yeah, it is something that i never could deny but it's too predictable and too cliche to fly so i won't tell you i love you though you can see it in my eyes if i told you i loved you would you take it to your heart? would you tell me the same? or would you just depart? would you build, with me, mountains? or would you blow them all apart? hmmmm....yeah i won't tell you i love you but this is a start... -3/30/05

Geddy Lee 02:25
GEDDY LEE I had a dream the other day I was playing in a town so far away In from of twenty thousand strong Who knew the words to every single song And, to my left, who do I see? In the shadows, rocking out, it’s Geddy Lee He’s playing circles all around me On bass and backup vocals, Geddy Lee Wish I could be playing in a band with Geddy Lee Oh, woe is me, to be playing in a band with Geddy Lee And as the set continued on He played the lines I wrote for all my songs He took a solo on “Kitestrings” On “Zero Jane”, he sang all the words I sing And all the lights shone down on me We improvised the encore, wild and free For a moment, I could see Myself playing in a band with Geddy Lee Wish I could be playing in a band with Geddy Lee Oh, woe is me, to be playing in a band with Geddy Lee -2002

ANOTHER DUMB POP SONG I opened up my ears to hear A different sound between these waves And every song I found just sounds the same From verse to bridge to scene to scene Their picture's in a magazine These corporations wave their ball and chain You got anger packaged in a box It lacks emotion but it rocks Their setlist never changes day by day And every time the trendy train gets off The last stop bursts in flames And every lamb is lost, without a way Who wrote the new pop culture book? I swear to god, I've seen that look In every decade leading up to me I've seen every single alt-rock cook Mix cliched lines and stolen hooks What happened to the "M" in MTV? Every minute, next big thing It happens every day Cast another stone to see New flavors you can find today Tomorrow who will be on top? Tomorrow I may be on top The next day, I'll be gone forevermore So I'm leaving now, I'm leaving now Don't try to wonder where I'll go I'm another dumb pop song On the radio And I'm leaving now. -Fall 1998

ONE FOR THE VAULT i sat down to write a song i guess it was to be a quick one coz it just wasn't all that long sometimes that makes for a treasure soemtimes that makes for a hit sometimes they're kinda clever then again, sometimes they're shit i sat down to write another song threw down some great lines and then it all went wrong the verses were cliche the chorus just stunk and the bridge, a bouquet of toilets and skunks i got up to give up and then it just hit a brilliant idea, so i ran with it the sequence was strong and the lyrics weren't trite but i shitcanned the song just out of spite coz it's one for the dumpster one for the bin one for the box set not all of them win a place on the album or at least in the set it's one for the vault and that's the best it'll get -2/12/07

about

In 2017, in conjunction with my "anniversary" series of album releases, I teamed up with my old pal Rust Rudolph, and his Flyingdeer Records label, and began releasing a series of singles. One track from each album was selected, with cover art that aesthetically fit with its parent album and tons of exclusive b-side tracks, and released worldwide on pretty much every platform imaginable. To date, 25 singles have been released, each one featuring anywhere from 1-8 additional tracks.

The fun thing about b-sides is that all the rules go out the window. You can really put anything on the back of a single and it is acceptable. The only rule I followed here is that the b-side songs had to have been written at the same time as the songs on its corresponding album. Sometimes the songs I chose were ones that didn't come to mind when I was recording the album. Sometimes they were ones that just didn't fit the sequence of the album. Sometimes they were ones that I felt were too good to get buried on an album when they could get a wider release on a single.

And sometimes they were just too fucking stupid. This set collects those songs, the goofy songs, the quirky songs, the songs that I wrote just to make myself laugh. Eleven of these songs were issued as b-sides to various singles, while four of them are being shared here for the very first time. As I once sang, "my songs are my children", and I absolutely love these songs to no end. But still, this album is not for the unfamiliar or casual listener. These are songs that might clear a room full of strangers and friends alike. But, fuck it, there's nothing wrong with getting stupid sometimes.
