Zigreata 03:28
ZIGREATA zigreata in the midday sun it's like pandora in the garden when she's having fun her prying eyes, they keep their beacon on the drifter at the bar he put the pedal to the metal but he won't get far and in the shadow there's a sun so bright her eyes, they shine like ziggy's eyes her eyes, they take me to the garden, oh my zigreata in the twilight glow she's got her hand on the pariah who forgot to go and in her pocket is the answer no one ever sought until this moment when i thought that she had better not and in the shadow there a sun so bright her eyes, they shine like ziggy's eyes her eyes, tney take me to the garden, oh my zigreata in the midnight moon she goes a-waltzin' down the gutter but it's all too soon her lyin' eyes, they tell another just to see themselves believer's on the back porch just to breathe their spell and in the shadow there's a sun so bright her eyes, they shine like ziggy's eyes her eyes, they take me to the garden, oh my -1/7/19

BOUNCE OFF THE WALLS like a fly on a mirror mirage we duck and weave through the haze more of that later, for now we engage in another righteous day now, all at once, let us bounce off the walls and run holding still for the media light she's brighter than the sun and it's burning forever and ever and breathing no matter how fast you can run now, all at once, let us bounce off the walls and run to the light it's never too bright to see to the light even with this shadow lurking over me to the light, be my shoulder to the light, make it good to the light, feelin' bolder than we should like a storm on the edge of the fog it's getting to be that phase when all we digest is a tale of unrest and whatever appears in the way now, all at once, let us bounce off the walls and run to the light it's never too bright to see to the light even with this shadow lurking over me to the light, be my shoulder to the light, make it good to the light, feelin' bolder than we should like the dark at the end of the day when the last of the fire is gone there's nothing left here but the dirt and the fear that's been building for far too long now, all at once, let us bounce off the walls and run to the light it's never too bright to see to the light even with this shadow lurking over me to the light soak it in just like a tree to the light there's nothing like being free to the light, be my shoulder to the light, make it good to the light, not so cold to the light, it's understood to the light, be my shoulder to the light, make it good to the light, feelin' bolder than we should -1/24/19

THRIFT STORE DIAMOND angel in the cupboard devil on the floor it's a half a mile maybe in the dust, it's more sometimes it comes easy when we still got stride and even if we don't we're still on for the ride she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin she's gonna go and do it again she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin a bombshell waiting for her golden gaze kinda scared but it's nothing like those olden days when the thunder came quickly and the rain washed out all the reasons that we had to ever go without she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin she's gonna go and do it again she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin this burn was building for a hundred years through the pantomime and casting off of all our fears when the mania sets we're gonna laugh out loud at all the messes that we made that left us oh so proud she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin she's gonna go and do it again she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin take a moment out to watch her spin she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin it radiates against her skin she's got a thrift store diamond underneath her chin -1/4/19

Pack It Up 05:43
PACK IT UP the morning whistles like a train it's back to earth and out again sometimes it's all i've got just play the role and not meander in the wind and pray for rain there's something deep below my skin pestering my soul to take a spin i'm thinkin' 'bout the time between the last go around and where we've been this chain is stronger still every link another thrill bygone moments in a pile, it's all been seen there's something deep below my skin pestering my soul to take a spin to blaze a trail and get back in to the wind time's no longer on my side these lines grow darker all the time pack it up and let us keep on down the line of all the times to shout and curse i'm choosing now, it could be worse so hold on for it all and don't go crashing into walls every single moment is a first there's something deep below my skin pestering my soul to take a spin to blaze a trail and get back in to the wind time's no longer on my side these lines grow darker all the time pack it up and let us keep on down the line maybe now i'll stop and breathe but every moment i'll believe that my day will surely come so might as well pick up and run into the shelter of this storm and never leave there something deep below my skin pestering my soul to take a spin to blaze a trail and get back in to the wind time's no longer on my side these lines grow darker all the time we're running out of places left to hide and we're tangled in the space between the vines so pack it up and let us keep on down the line -1/6/19

Lionsong 03:07
LIONSONG i reach out for another day and grab whatever comes my way between the sheets, i cut and run to satisfy what's left undone and the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun i close my eyes and wait it out and get on with another route where nothing is the same and yet it feels like a passage to the space between the wheels and the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun there's nowhere to run the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun this feeble fire relies on the way it goes when they cut the wire and leave me on my toes just for a moment enough to see my life fly by in that fractured space behind my eyes under this spell, i block it out while the lions on my back, they curse and shout and still it barely seeps into my soul for those moments in the sun that i just stole and the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun there's nowhere to run the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun i'm overrun and the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun there's nowhere to run the lions keep begging the lions keep begging in the sun all at once i hit the wall and stumble inches down the hall to silence all that howling of the wind until it kicks and comes around again -1/27/19

15 03:39
15 i was feeling backwards on the inside when i heard a tiny bell ring in my head this tiny whirlwind that came in with the tide and i just took it off and got with it instead i never thought that i would find a light so bright shining down upon my soul, down upon my soul and i just ran with it while setting all my sights on that one and only one, she makes me whole i was feeling dark there for a while then with just the music in my head to bide my time til i looked up to see her blow in with the wind, yeah i finally made it after all those years i climbed i never thought that i would see my spirit grow until i shattered all my fears, shattered all my fears and through the dust her shadow lined up on the road right next to mine for all these years fifteen years on the back on this riddle goin' down, goin' down give me just a little bit of love all around and sing it like a fiddle going round and round and round i was feeling holy for a moment when i knew that it was she i dreamt about in the forest of my mind it came and went just like a passing ship on some uncharted route i never knew that it could be so real my mind is still blown, my mind is still blown i'll take it from here if i can feel what i feel until my garden is fully grown fifteen years on the back on this riddle goin' down, goin' down give me just a little bit of love all around and sing it like a fiddle going round and round and round -1/16/19

about

Chris Anderson's 78th full-length album release.

So, as I have mentioned many times before, every February I take part in the RPM Challenge, which involves creating an album from scratch in one month. My first such challenge was in 2007 and I have participated every year since, sometimes with multiple releases. The last couple of years featured different sorts of projects and I hadn't written any songs in quite some time. I wasn't sure if anything would come out but as soon as I started, songs would just spill forth with no effort. It was all I could do to capture them before they drifted away. Before I knew it I had over thirty songs and they soon started to fall into one of three categories:

1) socio-political
2) deeply personal
3) other

The first category wound up shaping the album, Shaker The Moon, and that was my offering for the RPM challenge. The second category was a big one, and that formed the basis for Something Akin To A Healer, which was released in July 2019. Chasing Twilight features the songs that fall into the third category. Many of these songs are songs of joy, songs of love, and songs of being, but elements of the first two categories do creep in from time to time. All of the songs, on all three albums, were written in the same 30-day span, and all of it was recorded in just four days, in February - going in, I didn't know what was happening so I just recorded the entire lot, and it was some of the most fun I've ever had.

While the first two albums shaped themselves rather quickly, it took me a long time to get this particular album together. Originally it was to be called "Shackalack" and featured a different sequence of songs and it just didn't work. Then, after taking the photo that appears on the cover, the album came to be known as "Chasing Twilight". But it still wasn't right. I wrote some more songs for it, and shuffled some things around. It still wasn't right. Then I fell into a very deep depression and was pretty much incapable of anything musical for a number of months. Every so often I would come back to this and it wasn't enough to inspire me. It just wasn't right.

As I started to pull myself out of the mire, I settled back into being productive and I recorded those new songs, re-sequencing this album, based around those tracks. It still wasn't right. In fact, it was at its most lost at that point. Then I wrote another song, the very next day, and realized that all of those newer songs are actually destined for a completely different album. So I removed those tracks, rearranged the order of the songs from those original sessions (pulled two of them from the running), and finally I think I got it right. I hope you think so. And if it's not right, well that's just tough shit because the album is done, it's my current statement, and that's the way it is. Dig it!
