Gutterball 03:50
GUTTERBALL in the gutter is a shelter from the wind that's blowing up and down, time and again somewhere out in the storm is where i stand just wading through the moments in my hands simple is as simple does release the aching doves in the gutter there another road ahead that'll keep me on my toes until i'm dead but anyway, it's far beyond the bend i'll take it like a thief or just pretend shady eyes can hypnotize the strongest never shoves too much to touch is never what my shadow says he loves simple is as simple does release the aching doves to the wicked wind i'll see it to the end in the gutter i can't see for all the haze that's cluttered all around me like a maze i built it so i know my way around but sometimes it's enough to feel the ground lyin' fools, they stole the jewels and left behind the gloves for all of us to shout and cuss at those who rise above simple is as simple does release the aching doves to the wicked wind i'll see it to the end in the gutter there's no other way to crawl in the wilderness i'm backed up to the wall i heard it once or twice, the siren's song and smiled though she couldn't stay for long shady eyes can hypnotize the strongest never shoves too much to touch is never what my shadow says he loves lyin' fools, they stole the jewels and left behind the gloves for all of us to shout and cuss at those who rise above simple is as simple does release the aching doves to the wicked wind i'll see it to the end -1/14/19

GO DOWN SWINGIN' hey ho, it's time to go down swingin' like a bad man head in the sand i got the wheels and the ground below me i'm rolling like a freight train thief in the rain i got it now i wrapped it up to make a point and disappeared between the joints of the barricade i built inside my head might as well do something else instead hey ho, it's time to go down swingin' like a bad man head in the sand i got the wheels and the ground below me i'm rolling like a freight train thief in the rain i got it now sometimes it's better left undone than to sweat out every moment in the sun before the shade, before those rainy days wash out everything left in the way hey ho, it's time to go down swingin' like a bad man head in the sand i got the wheels and the ground below me i'm rolling like a freight train thief in the rain i got it now this time, we all can feel it swell from the furthest reaches of our dryest well and settle on our souls without a sound so we're moving on, a thousand heels abound hey ho, it's time to go down swingin' like a bad man head in the sand i got the wheels and the ground below me i'm rolling like a freight train thief in the rain i got it now -1/8/19

CARNIVAL EYES carnival eyes in the midnight sun a seed in disguise, a shadow on the run when the silence ignites we'll just pretend we're done carnival eyes like a river swim out to the surface, now we're back again when the sunlight erupts we better move back in carnival eyes in the mirror glow shades of the blades we never used to know when the chaos collides, only then we'll go carnival eyes under a raven sky capture the moments as they pass on by moving on to the edge between how and why and it's a circus around here three rings and cavalcades, ya hear those eyes keep ringing clear carnival eyes beyond the last known light shatter delusions of what's wrong and right if the thunder won't settle then we're off to fight carnival eyes on their dying day huzzah to the lids that get in the way and make us forget the things we need to say this tunnel takes us to the end of each beginning, break, and bend our sweetest fear is our best friend -1/10/19

about

Chris Anderson's 73rd full-length album release.

I have spent the majority of my life writing songs, so many songs. A pretty ridiculous amount of songs, in fact. Albums were made....oh so many albums, but not enough albums for all the songs. And, once my recording style was standardized in 2008, every song that came before was back in the hopper, to be brought up to the standard at hand.

I started addressing the issue in 2011 and 2013, when I recorded a ton of those older songs. Some of the most important ones were released on 2014's Reinvent The Lie, while the rest just kinda hung around, waiting for a purpose. In 2016, I got the idea to fashion those songs into new albums and that spearheaded a campaign that is still continuing, as I am constantly recording batches of old songs and making new albums out of them. As such, I put myself on a songwriting moratorium, so I could focus on that project. I still flexed my creative muscles on rewrites and revisions but new songs were kept to a minimum.

Every year since 2007 I have participated in the RPM Challenge, which charges artists with the task of recording an album over the month of February. It has always been successful for me and one of my favorite times of the year. Every album created until 2016 featured songs written during the challenge as well, and some of those albums are among the most important in this collection. With the songwriting moratorium going, in 2017 I looked back to my first RPM album, both the album itself and the many songs that were written for it but not recorded. The result was an album called Disastering, and I had a great time making it. 2018 saw me having issues with my recording gear so my RPM offering was a set of three extended improvisations called Octarina, which is a very cool record, something completely different. By the time 2019 came around, however, it was time to start writing songs again.

Rather than do it all in February, I wanted the songs to breathe a bit before being recorded so I started writing at the beginning of January. The goal was to write one song per day and while there were some days where that was impossible, I would always make up the difference later, and at the end of the month I had 31 viable new songs. I feared that the process would be difficult, seeing as I hadn't written anything in some time, but it was actually the opposite. I would pick up a guitar and a song would just spill out immediately and with very little effort. And those songs weren't gibberish either. They were songs with meaning, words that needed to be said, and a kickass musical soundtrack with which to do it. Each song was immediately recorded as an elaborate acoustic demo, and I would continue on, as the pile grew.

As soon as the month changed over to February, it was time to start recording. I took a couple days off of work, thus creating a four-day weekend, and I recorded the entire lot over that period. Long days and wild inspiration led to a vast bank of what I consider to be some of the strongest material of my "career".

Early on, I knew there would be more than one album created and it didn't take long for the songs to start falling into one of three categories:

a) socio-political commentary
b) deeply personal, reflective, holy-shit-I-just-turned-45
c) other

The first category is what makes up this album. I shall not preach here (I'll let the song speak) but these are very trying times and these songs could only come into being in this day and age. I wish they did not have to exist but they do, and I am glad that they do. This album is most certainly a statement and fortunately I believe the songs support that. I have a deep love and appreciation for every song on this album but "Workin' The Machine", "Go Down Swingin'", and the title track go beyond blowing me away. One of my proudest accomplishments.
