Last Glance 05:03
LAST GLANCE a bitter holy ghost and a tear-stained letter just a roll of the dice but they don't agree throw the other ones out, save the rest for later for when you're standing at your mama's gate in the rain, no doubt, or there ain't no me give my love to the ladies of the bowery don't tell them all i said don't tell them that i'm coming home standing on the edge wasting my moments give my love to the ladies of the left bank don't tell them all i said don't tell them that i'm going home hanging by a thread chasing my last glance turn me on like the weather of a thousand nations standing side by side in this glowing sheen farm the smaller ones out, save the best for later for when you're lying on your mama's grave in the cold, no doubt, froze or lying still give my love to the ladies of the bowery don't tell them all i said don't tell them that i'm coming home standing on the edge wasting my moments give my love to the ladies of the left bank don't tell them all i said don't tell them that i'm going home hanging by a thread chasing my last glance... truth is nothing more than a lie unraveled on the floor where our shadows all look the same leave it all, for this fever's on the rise for certain or keep on pressing for some righteous age for it's all, right here, yeah the time is now give my love to the ladies of the bowery don't tell them all i said don't tell them that i'm coming home standing on the edge wasting my moments pretending that i'm not still there give my love to the ladies of the left bank don't tell them all i said don't tell them that i'm going home hanging by a thread chasing my last glance -7/19/03

DESTINATION OVERHEAD belief, a force of reckoning it beckons me to take that jump and fly higher, higher in the sky relief, it comes in colors sometimes some of them are dull and others shine brighter, brighter in the sky think about the life you've led it doesn't matter what you've read destination overhead sinister, the ceiling bar the doors and hide he plows the higher ground in circles, ovals, round and round call upon a voice, your own to see you through this other side of light that sucks the darkness from the night you talk about that time you fled you stitch it up and laugh instead destination overhead sieze the day, yo! some of them are teachers others preach and miss the point for all the words and all the stories that you heard yet some of them still run in circles some of them paing Xs on the sand and some just hold it in their hands some may bleed and some just pray for all the moments in their way some might drift out, others still find solace in their time to kill for all the dirt they never bled for all the words they never said destination overhead -4/8/04

DRIVE INTO THE WALLS you didn't get to sleep that night for the howling of the air in june scattershot out all the lights whistling a different tune look around it's the dawning of ages when we drive into the walls steer around the wreckage now just a spell on down the road check it out, we're flying now don't sleep before you get too old look around it's the coming of ages when we drive into the walls just like the ones we know they're dancing 'round the telephone - hello just like the world we know is falling on these shoulders and i've never felt so older, wiser whiter, brighter, lungs on fire when they shut their eyes and say "that's all" before we drive into the walls it's the coming of ages when we drive into the walls -7/19/03+5/10/04

Arms In Arms 03:10
ARMS IN ARMS like a record of the last day when all the eagles set their sights on a new way like a weather vane you change as the wind blows you lose effects beneath your eyes and your old clothes two arms in arms and growing out like summer rains two arms in arms alarms sound off the passing day like a ribbon tied around your waistline like a ribbon tying back your hair like a jealous cat the yellow grass grows there keep it short or let it grow, grow, grow two arms in arms and holding down the oldest flame two arms in arms so warm, beneath the summer rain like a sticker on your suitcase revealing every place you're ever been to like the liquor that you suck down your face you hold it down and then you hold me too two arms in arms and lost in aquapurple haze two arms in arms sound off the days like tandem trains two arms in arms so warm so loaded in it's gaze two arms in arms alarms show ways out of this maze -5/17/04

DRAGGIN' THE DIRT i never thoguht i'd be so over you my mind kept pickin' but the plot just thickened and the clock's still tickin' away i never thought i'd be so over you we had a nice time, baby over ice cream, maybe we can laugh and throw it all away this time last year, drowning in tears drag the dirt longer than the plow can roll we kept it all solid for a shining moment in the sand this time last year, drowning in tears drag the dirt longer than the plow can roll we sat to long that we couldn't hardly take a stand i never thought i'd be so over you it's kinda funny, now i'm thinkin' of the time spent drinkin' trying to make it all sink away i never thought i'd be so over you it's like a weird dream, baby when i wake up, maybe i'll admit that you were all a phase this time last year, drowning in tears drag the dirt longer than the plow can roll we kept it all solid for a shining moment in the sand this time last year, drowning in tears drag the dirt longer than the plow can roll we ran all out of lies until the time had come to fold our hands but still i drag the dirt longer than the plow can roll in the sand i never thought i'd be so over you... -3/11/04

THE SIDEWALK AND THE WINDOW under all the shutters and the wretches of the row there lies a tiny droplet of an early morning snow rolling down the gutter head to head and toe to toe it settles in a crevice in the space between the sidewalk and the window it stays until the sun has soaked it up to way back when in a spell, it turns around and falls back down again to see familiar faces on the dark side of the road and settle in that crevice in the space between the sidewalk and the window all their eyes, surprised are sizing up to stop and stare waiting for a sign for why the moment brought them there staring into space erasing all they'd need to show staring at the space above the sidewalk underneath the window chances take a moment just a moment in the sun drifting off to join the others water on the run then another falls and then another falls below they meet up in that crevice in the space between the sidewalk and the window -8/03/03

about

Chris Anderson's 75th full-length album release.

In July 2003, I embarked on a new album project. I had just come out of a very long and weird relationship and I was gutted, bitter, and bewildered. As always, the most inspired music comes from heartbreak and songs came at a furious pace and dozens of songs were written and recorded over the next few months and it soon became clear that two albums were in the works. One was called The Crown while the other became known as Waiting For The Wolves.

In January 2004, while I was still trying to make sense of that wealth of material, I was once again inspired to write and, over the next few months, an album called Storm Free came into being. Those sessions also coincided with me meeting, courting, and preparing to move in with the woman I would eventually marry. Soon it became clear that these albums formed a trilogy.

1) The Crown - this is more or less a concept album, delivered in a linear manner, detailing a year in my love life, starting with frustration and then moving through bewilderment, heartbreak, recovery, rebound, and then redemption. It was intended to be my crowning achievement, and it was, which is why it was named The Crown.

2) Waiting For The Wolves - there is some spillover here, as many of these songs were first intended for The Crown, but there are other kinds of songs here, and the scattershot nature of these tracks, along with a certain detachment that was present suggests that this was a wilderness period.

3) Storm Free - redemption, at last. Strong, immediate songs that capture a spirit once again on the rise. Occasionally reflective but mostly optimistic.

These three albums, taken together, represent one of the grandest turning points in my life and is a collection of music that I hold most dear, possibly even sacred.

Which is why it took me a while to work out how I would approach this material for this huge project I am currently on. While I considered re-recording the albums as they originally were, I decided that I couldn't disrespect the era like that - those records are a product of their time and should be left intact. So I decided to leave them alone and instead choose the strongest songs from each album to create this set.

While this new album might not tell a linear story, the meaning is still there. It is very interesting to be able to look at this with fifteen years of hindsight - one third of my life has passed since the events that inspired those original albums and the scars have long since healed.

The rearview is a very interesting place sometimes.
